S78 via Hylan and SubwayGuy are right about the being early at certain times during rush hours and off-peak.

 

Perhaps this is one of the many reasons why some of the trains go to Utica (with some other trains and some trains going to New Lots) because of the double switching east of Franklin going from the express to the local track then finally the IRT Nostrand Avenue Line and not just the capacity issues at the two-tracked Flatbush terminal that ends at bumper blocks to the south.

 

to New Lots and to Utica/NL Yard are strictly due to limited capacity at Flatbush to turn trains, and the reality that the Manhattan corridors need every single one of those trains to minimize overcrowding.

 

Also overnight a handful of trains are stored in NL Yard to get AM rush service started out of Brooklyn.
