StevenFrancis Posted April 15, 2013 Share #28 Posted April 15, 2013 Well there are two types of trip arms , the electric one, that is the larger and slow moving one, which is mostly quiet and the electro-pneumatic one, the shorter and quicker moving one. The electro-pneumatic one, always has a cylinder thing near it if you notice and when the arm comes up, it is the cylinder releasing the air from small piston inside the little box that is on the trackbed that drives the arm up, its designed like this so if a power outage occurs, it will release and the arm will come up for safety reasons, now I sometimes hear clanging on the tracks which sound like a glass bottle being knocked on the rail
Eric B Posted April 16, 2013 Share #29 Posted April 16, 2013 The electric one is GRS and the electro-pneumatic one is USS. The IRT is mostly USS, wile the BMT is entirely GRS, and the IND is mixed; probably more GRS, but with some sections as USS, most notably, most of Queens.
