Via Garibaldi 8 Posted May 22, 2013 Author Share #26 Posted May 22, 2013 Shit, I haven't seen a single chicken & waffles place up here in my 2 years upstate, yet when I lived in Harlem there was one not even a block away. I hear there's a place, but it's out in Schenectady or someplace like that, and while I may love chicken and waffles I don't like it enough to go 20 miles for it. Oh well, at least there's that KFC/Taco Bell down the street! Although there are very few deli's up here, (at least in my neighborhood which is a real shame. I miss Harlem. But anyways, when I first started reading this article, I started dying, I mean is it wrong I find this hilarious, and completely ironic? Seriously, somebody should go mug them, and then bill them for it, for their services in providing the "true experience"! Yeah we don't have those places here in Riverdale. Just not that type of neighborhood. There's a Golden Krust at Victory & Bay. Actually for fried chicken places, I'm pretty sure there's a fried chicken place by Forest & Broadway. (I know it sells fried chicken. It might be some kind of deli or something) Plus there's a Planet Wings at Forest & Bard, and as much as you deny that the West Brighton Houses are in West Brighton, there's a Crown Fried Chicken across the street on Broadway. Well I don't live on Staten Island anymore and haven't for over a year now so this is all irrelevant as to what exists now.

You said "I personally don't think I've even seen a Golden Krust before let alone eat at one." You would've seen one from the windows of an S48 or S98. Then you said "so that's why I guess I've never had fried chicken places or any of these grease joints in any neighborhood I've lived in." I pointed out fried chicken places in a neighborhood you lived in.

Last I checked Victory Blvd and Bay St. is not part of West Brighton, so I have no idea why you're bringing that one up for but even so that one must be relatively new. If there is one on Forest and Bard it's fairly recent because there were no chicken places or any of those sort of places. The place everyone including myself went to was Subway's or the Italian places. As for the one on Forest and Broadway, it could be there but I didn't recall seeing it. There were so many stores that came and went there (mainly corner stores/deli's) that I doubt anyone was keeping track like that or knew who sold what. At one point I recall there being an Italian place there that never opened. As for the last one, it would make sense based on the demographics down there, but I'm not walking around other neighborhoods or around housing projects looking for fried chicken places and since I don't live there anymore I really couldn't care either way. Roadcruiser1 Posted May 23, 2013 Share #29 Posted May 23, 2013 Recent news says that this tour has been shut down. http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/local/2013/05/22/under-pressure-bronx-ghetto-tour-shuts-down/ Of course we can still talk about Crown Fried Chicken and Golden Krust. Only a matter of time, though I wouldn't have expected for them to fold so soon.

I'm saying you would've seen it passing by on the bus, because it's been there for a good 6-7 years at least. Not to mention the ones in Manhattan I mentioned. As for Forest & Broadway, well, all I know is I saw a sign saying it sold fried chicken, so as far as I'm concerned, it's a fried chicken place that was in a neighborhood you lived in. (Your words not mine). As for Castleton & Broadway, West Brighton was a neighborhood you lived in, and that chicken place was in West Brighton. I wouldn't expect you to walk around looking for it, but it was there.

Uh not really because I started taking the express bus back in '06, so I had no reason to go down to Victory and Bay as that is nowhere near my neighborhood. If there are others in Manhattan, or elsewhere, like I said, I don't go around looking for those places, so even if I did pass them I more than likely wouldn't recall them anyway since I have no reason to. I haven't eaten in McDonald's in almost 10 years so that goes to show you how much I frequent fast food places or care about them for that matter. Come to think of it there was a chicken place on Forest and North Burgher but business must've been pretty bad because it closed down. Then again it looked like a total dump... Something from the 80's...

youngblaze Posted May 24, 2013 Share #34 Posted May 24, 2013 FWIW, here's a couple of links about the tour: http://www.realbronxtours.com/tours.html http://www.newyorkpass.com/En/new-york-attractions/tickets/Real-Bronx-Tour/ To be fair, it does show more than just the ghetto parts of The Bronx. But on the other hand, she shouldn't be making a show of other people's misery when she does go into the ghetto parts. The Bx12 doesn't really pass through a whole lot of real ghetto parts. Maybe University Heights, but that's not particularly run-down or anything. (Of course, if you actually mean "at it's finest", then it does pass by the Bronx Zoo, Bronx Park, Pelham Bay Park, Fordham shopping district, etc, so it is a fairly good route from a tourist standpoint). Yeah, he'd be better off riding the Bx15, Bx41, Bx36 and Bx27.
