I'm going to go out and say this isn't the least surprising. While such behavior by staff is wrong, to say the least, and definitely should not be tolerated this is very common in various institutions across the country.

Part of the problem is that seemingly no could even give a f**k about the institutionalized. In fact, I see that attitude prevalent across the ACA (American Correctional Association). The ACA goes as far to have a selective bidding process for select institutions, which is what happened here at East Mississippi, and as a result the institutionalized suffer.

Without a doubt that this needs to be corrected, and with any hope the lawsuit out will achieve that to an extent. It can't reverse any damage, but it can prevent it in the future.

If this is a typical facility for the mentally ill, sick, or troubled, I would kill a loved one with my own hands before I let them be taken there.

A bit drastic, but I agree with your view.

Another unfortunate reality is that many of the institutionalized are there because their family could care less about them. To say it's f**ked up is a huge understatement.

The “solitary confinement zones house dozens of seriously mentally ill prisoners who are locked down in filthy cells for days, weeks, or even years at a time,” the suit alleges. “Rapes, stabbings, beatings, and other acts of violence are rampant,” and inmates have set fires as “the only way to get medical attention in emergencies.”

My god.

This is the result of the meltdown of the mental health system and the closures of the institutions. This is shocking. I can see wholeheartedly why CenSin blew a gasket in reading these articles in this thread.

As the author stated in the NY Times article, the conditions in these prisons are horrific. That's an understatement. Living hell on Earth is more like it. Heh, that's even an understatement in itself. Despicable.

Edit:

I didn't even read enough into your comment until a few seconds ago. Indeed an understatement. Really this is straight up satanic. Totally f**ked up.
