On the road to electrification!

The STM will soon test a standard-size biodiesel-electric hybrid bus

Montréal, June 3, 2013   –  On June 10, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will begin testing a biodiesel-electric hybrid bus lent to it by Nova Bus, a division of Volvo Group Canada Inc. This standard-size bus will boast a distinctive exterior appearance highlighting its “green” technology and serve passengers on the following lines:

  • 11 – Montagne
  • 14 – Amherst
  • 27 – Saint-Joseph
  • 31 – Saint-Denis
  • 32 – Lacordaire
  • 47 – Masson
  • 51 – Édouard-Montpetit
  • 54 – Charland/Chabanel
  • 97 – Mont-Royal
  • 144 – des Pins
  • 427 – Express Saint-Joseph

Service trials will run until the end of October to assess the energy efficiency and reliability of this type of series biodiesel-electric bus before the remaining buses are delivered to transit companies in Quebec.

The STM’s purchase of standard-size series biodiesel-electric hybrid buses has been carried out following the issuing of an invitation to tender for a joint purchase with the other Quebec transit companies overseen by the Société de gestion et d’acquisition de véhicules et systèmes de transport (AVT) with the support of an expert panel of representatives from the various transit companies. The first vehicles will be delivered in 2014. This initiative results from an urban transit demonstration project carried out in 2008-2009 in collaboration with the Société de transport de l’Outaouais. A comparison of the performance of eight biodiesel-electric hybrid buses with that of conventional buses in Montréal showed that the hybrid technology generated up to 30% savings in fuel, resulting in the equivalent reduction of GHG emissions.

The bus is numbered 33-999. It has the BAE HybriDrive HDS 200 system instead of Allison EP40 like the older production models.

Here's my video inside this bus. :)

This bus is now often seen on routes 11 and 97 (Métro Mont-Royal).

But if you come up to Montréal for a short visit, the best location is at métro Laurier, as most of Mont-Royal's garage routes are located at this metro station/bus terminal. Of course, you must be lucky. ;)

For example, routes 27 and 51. :)

Enjoy your ride! :D
