how to find a telephone company for a phone number

lets say, I know the phone number but it cannot be found in any directory.

I am interested who is an provider (phone company) for that number.

In order to contact them and ask what's wrong with that number.

Well the phone number can be from various phone companies (ie: Verizon, Vonage). If you try 411 or 411.com you might a better chance of getting that answer. You can also call the phone company to find out if they are that specific provider but I doubt they will reveal that type of imformation.
