metsfan Posted November 5, 2008 Share #28 Posted November 5, 2008 The crosstown lines that will likely be constructed into the future will probably have both specs to accommodate for the conditions involved on establishing the ROW. As of now the SAS is IND/BMT loading gauge. Future lines could be IRT loading gauge since those trains weigh less & take up less room. - A
R32 3348 Posted November 5, 2008 Share #29 Posted November 5, 2008 Why should the SAS be built to A Division specs? It's an IND line and was part of the second system. There is no current thrid ave. el, so if thatl ine gets built it would be BMT. Plus, B division cars have more capacity.
metsfan Posted November 6, 2008 Share #30 Posted November 6, 2008 True, more capacity, but like i said, IRT is lighter & smaller. - A
SubwayGuy Posted November 6, 2008 Share #31 Posted November 6, 2008 they should've made the SAS to A Division specs EVERYTHING is built to B div specs nowadays except addons to the A Div system. The only reason the A div was built smaller was because when August Belmont founded the IRT and started building he didn't want freight to go on the subway trackage for any reason whatsoever so he built it small so that wouldn't happen. Later on the thought of this was never going to happen, so BMT and IND built bigger. And it would've been too expensive to go back and adjust the loading gauge to fit wider trains on all the A Div. Nowadays things are built to B Div because it's higher capacity
