Port Washington!

Recommended Posts

Very good night shots on the M-3's, the photoset is a looker. +1.

Awesome M-3s at Port Washington, I gotta try to get some LIRR photos for a change!

Indeed, this got me motivated.

Excellent photos, Mr. Summer!

And yes, the MU's depicted in the photos above are M7's, not M3's.

Why there are "watch the gap" sign?

Those platforms seems to be high and without any curve. Are the platforms higher than the trains doors?

There's a gap between the train and the platform. So if you were to not step over it, you'd become stuck between the train and the platform.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe most or all of the LIRR platforms have a little extra clearance between the trains and platforms because, freight cars needed to/still pass through stations along the line. The freight cars need the extra room.

There has to be a gap so that any train car (passenger or freight) doesn't side swipe the length of the platform at 80 mph. I think the average freight car is the same width or thinner than our passenger fleet, so that doesn't have anything to do with it.

Okay, well, I raise the freight question because when I was working there, I was told that some freight cars in the past have scraped along the platform edge.
