So How Did Building 7 of the World Trade Center Collapse?

Very Interesting Story.

Feds Say They've Solved 9/11 Mystery

By DEVLIN BARRETT, AP

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (Aug. 21) - Federal investigators said Thursday they have solved a mystery of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks: the collapse of World Trade Center building 7, a source of long-running conspiracy theories.

Scientists with the National Institute of Standards and Technology say their three-year investigation of the collapse determined the demise of WTC 7 was actually the first time in the world a fire caused the total failure of a skyscraper.

"The reason for the collapse of World Trade Center 7 is no longer a mystery," said Dr. Shyam Sunder, the lead investigator on the NIST team.

Investigators also concluded that the collapse of the nearby towers broke the city water main, leaving the sprinkler system in the bottom half of the building without water.

The building has been the subject of a wide range of conspiracy theories for the last seven years, partly because the collapse occurred about seven hours after the twin towers came down. That fueled suspicion that someone intentionally blew up the building in a controlled demolition.

Critics like Mike Berger of the group 9/11 Truth said he wasn't buying the government's explanation.

"Their explanation simply isn't sufficient. We're being lied to," he said, arguing that there is other evidence suggesting explosives were used on the building.

Sunder said his team investigated the possibility that an explosion inside the building brought it down, but found there was no large boom or other noise that would have occurred with such a detonation. Investigators also created a giant computer model of the collapse, based partly on news footage from CBS News, that they say shows internal column failure brought down the building.

Investigators also ruled out the possibility that the collapse was caused by fires from a substantial amount of diesel fuel that was stored in the building, most of it for generators for the city's emergency operations command center.

The 77-page report concluded that the fatal blow to the building came when the 13th floor collapsed, weakening a critical steel support column that led to catastrophic failure.

"When this critical column buckled due to lack of floor supports, it was the first domino in the chain," said Sunder.

The NIST investigators issued more than a dozen building recommendations as a result of their inquiry, most of which repeat earlier recommendations from their investigation into the collapse of the two large towers.

In both instances, investigators concluded that extreme heat caused some steel beams to lose strength, causing further failures throughout the buildings until the entire structure succumbed.

The recommendations include building skyscrapers with stronger connections and framing systems to resist the effects of thermal expansion, and structural systems designed to prevent damage to one part of a building from spreading to other parts.

A spokeswoman for the leaseholder of the World Trade Center, developer Larry Silverstein, praised the government's work.

"Hopefully this thorough report puts to rest the various 9/11 conspiracy theories, which dishonor the men and women who lost their lives on that terrible day," said Silverstein spokeswoman Dara McQuillen.

In discussing the findings, the investigator Sunder acknowledged that some may still not be convinced, but insisted the science behind their findings is "incredibly conclusive."

"The public should really recognize the science is really behind what we have said," he said, adding: "The obvious stares you in the face."

Finally.

There were claims that the steel melted, when in fact it just needs to be heated for a time to lose strength. Some type of sparks or molten substance fell out of the south tower near the corner that went first. I believe that this substance is copper or some other softer metal used in the building or offices.

People don't realize how much heat over time can affect metals such as steel, especially if they are load bearing. Once you reach that critical "softness" level it will give and anything it's supporting will go down with it.

Yes w bush used 9/11 to invade iraq, but they didn't make 9/11 happen. Thankfully our troops might be coming home soon if the correct candidate is elected. :)

I used to be one of those people who thought that the 9/11 was a cover up, specially when Bush and Cheney refused to be interviewed under oath in relation with the 9/11 commission. As people we should understand that not everything is plane and sound. Other consideration had to be considered on their parts. Bush and Cheney wanted to secure certain information that compromise the security of this country and to be interviewed under oath wasn’t going to secured it. That been said, other measures had to be taken. Yes we entered IRAQ under false pretense but does it disclaim some of the evidence that was presented by some of our scientist. We must consider all possibilities. It is true that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line but it doesn’t mean that a straight line is the only way of getting there. If evidence proves that a possibility exists then it must be considered. 9/11 was a painful experience to most Americans, it would be even worse to think that our government had something to do with it. Let us open our minds for other possibilities instead of keeping a close mind.

I'm sorry but however it came down is neither here, nor there! The point is The Bush Administration knew it was about to happen and did nothing on purpose, and should be charged with Accesory to 4,000+ murders after the fact! That's all I have to say about that.

They were trying to cover their own asses.

Agree. Impeach before they leave office!

I am so sick of the leftist in this country saying that 7 World Trade Center was destroyed by bombs.:mad::mad: These dickbrains will never tell you that 7 World Trade Center was ACROSS THE STREET from 1 World Trade Center (North Tower). When 1 WTC came down, it not only damaged 7 WTC structurally, but because the hot (and on fire) debris from the collapsing 1 WTC hitting 7WTC, the already structurally damaged structure (7 WTC) was now on fire and thus the building collapsed because of that. Respect the victims of 9/11 and stop it with these retarded conspiracy theories.

Not leftists, just people who would rather blame poor leadership & not acknowledge that our society is more fragile than we think than get the real picture.

The fire happened from jet fuel soaked objects landing on it with papers etc, then the building ( i think it was a chunk of tower 1) fell into it damaging the diesel tanks & rupturing them and the fire spread.

I don't think some people realize how HUGE tower 1 and 2 were. Their footprint was one acre a piece. Not sure if any of you have ever seen an open acre of land with nothing in it, but it's no joke of a size. Then imagine 12 foot tall floors one acre each, multiply by 110, and thats a rough estimate of how tall they both were. The pieces that fell that day were bigger than most of the other buildings in NYC, and horribly damaged the hotel that was there, building 7, and the deutscha bank building, which had a 150 foot section ripped out of it by the weight of one of the outer wall sections crashing down into it.

Also i'd like to remind everyone who reads this that the entire world that had access to news of the event was also reeling & shocked & many countries held moments of silence & candle lit vigils & so on.

In one city a random gathering of an estimated one million people, mourning the event formed on the morning of sept 12, it was all ready evening there by the time they found out. The people marched in protest of the attacks. The city was Tehran. Iran's capitol.
