Just was wondering from a T/O and Conductor Perspective which lines are the most challenging to operate vs least challenging

from run times to difficult sections of track to certain stations...or anything else relevant...

Im an aspiring T/O and just would like some insider insight...Thanx!

The (3) and (B) are very similar - VERY easy routes to work with one exception - the braking is funny on that equipment (Kawasaki didn't seem to be very good at SMEEs). They're also the first routes to get suspended if the road blows up, so if you work the 3 or B, expect at least one trip dropped every week. I was always a fan of working the (4) as well - all straight stations in the Bronx, Manhattan is busy but you're in and out pretty fast (as long as you aren't making local stops), and then only 5 stops in Brooklyn! The (4) is also the only 3 borough route where you CAN'T get rerouted.

Most challenging routes? (A) overnight, (2) any time of the day, (6) any time, the (7) definitely has its moments, the (F) gets a lot of abuse especially on the weekend, and I never worked it but I've heard the old (R) route CTL-95 via Tunnel was always a nightmare.

Um yeah.... all of these I find to be overwhelmingly true...

(A) overnight huh, is this because of all the unsavory characters you can pick up at night?

Are you talking in terms of degree of difficulty of operating the line, or having hotspots it's easy to mess up on?

Or are you talking in terms of which lines have the most cab time vs. easier jobs that do less work?

Whats Less Cab Time?

Whats easier Jobs to work that New TOs wont even smell ,unless someone is in a giving mood in the Crew Office?  ;)

The (A) overnight is a challenge, because it's an endurance test. 59 stops southbound, 60 stops northbound. Oh, and there's flagging. And you're taking the same train out after your first half-trip. And you're 19 minutes late, and supposed to be out in 1 minute. Personally, it's my second favourite line to work, behind the (D).

The (F) I always find to be a challenge; I can count on one hand how many times I've been on time or early.

IRT guys, I assume the (2) is the same as the (A).

As a straphanger, the (2) is like a fiery trial or something to the extreme, when I have to commute to the Bronx. I feel like I'm about to suffer a brain aneurysm and suffer from hallucinations or something by the time I even get to Gun Hill Road from the Brooklyn IRT! Stop after stop after stop after.....

I don't know how you guys even do it without beginning to doze off like how many motorists would in their cars hitting the highway for the road trips. To me thats commendable, staying alert considering that fact that operating a train or manning the conductor position is not easy for a plethora of reasons. I can see why many in RTO say all the time that getting sufficient sleep and staying fit is very important to remain mentally sharp.

You folks are lucky i started with the  (2) and  (1)  train going out to Crooklyn Scraping the wall, all day everyday...

THAT alone was no joke, three years of doing that.

It broke a lot of New T/O's...

A lot...

what's your average run time on the A on midnights? I've have some nights on the 2 thats taken me just about 2 hours to get down to Flatbush then right back out. It's not my favorite but the night does go by quick. With little flagging on a good night it's about 1:45
