I was wondering How Trains get to There terminals from the Yard After being stored overnight...Like how long does it take to get to "rush hour" capacity from Both ends of a line...For instance Flatbush Ave 2/5 Dosent have a yard nearby so how long does it take trains to "deadhead" all the way from 239 or Livonia yard to flatbush? Same goes for terminals like Astoria/Ditmars, Far Rock, etc...

It should not take that long, since the MTA has to meet payroll. It depends on the individual line you are talking about.

As far as the (2) and (5) lines, most of their trains are stored at the 239th Street Yard or Unionport Yard. The trains that are put-in at Flatbush Avenue come from the Livonia Yard, which should take 30 minutes max (my educated guess is 15 - 20 minutes). Some lines only have a yard at one end and not the other. So, for example, they can only put trains in on the (E) at Jamaica Center, on the (G) at Church Avenue (from Coney Island), the (J) & (Z) at Jamaica Center, the (N) & (Q) at Coney Island, the (1) at 242nd Street, the (6) at Pelham Bay Park and the (7) at Main Street, respectively.

As far as Far Rockaway, you have to keep in mind that some (A) trains start at Rockaway Park as well, or they can easily move a train from the Rockaway Park Yard to Far Rockaway, which should take 15 minutes max, compared to Pitkin Yard which will take more time.

Simple answer to the OP is that they really don't.

a 2 or 5 being put out to Livonia yard is going to run to Utica or New Lots Ave instead of Flatbush. When it re-enters service, it's going to run from New Lots, then return to normal service on it's return trip from the Bronx. There is no deadheading to/from Flatbush. Flatbush sucks enough as it is.

If you look at the 5 timetable, the first pages with the actual times on notes that trains at certain hours may terminate at Utica, and at other hours may enter service at New Lots.

These trains are shown as always terminating at Utica.

returns

E. 180th 1455 (return as Utica 1611)

Dyre 1505

Dyre 1531

E. 180th 1550

E.180th 1614

put outs

Dyre 1912

Dyre 1922

Dyre 1932

Dyre 1943

In the AM peak, the first Northbound 5 is New Lots 550

IIRC, some New Lots layups DO end/start at Flatbush, they change ends at that middle track between Nevins and Atlantic Ave.

A couple of years ago on a Saturday night, I ridden a (2)  train that went out of service at Flatbush Ave, I doubt that train went all the way back to The Bronx NIS.

Some Js in the morning go in service from Broadway Junction to Parsons.  Some morning Ns and Qs go NIS from City Hall to Astoria and go in service there.  Some morning As go to Euclid from Pitkin Yard and operate in service to Far Rock or Lefferts.

I'm probably wrong about this but when I used to take the Brighton in the morning there would be (B) trains stored on the express track for the morning rush.

Example: While waiting for the (Q) I'd still see (B) trains lined up on both express tracks around Avenue U and Neck Road. Incoming (B) trains from Manhattan would be on the local track for the time being skipping the local stops. I do see some of the laid up (B) trains start at Kings Highway though, but most of them go through Sheepshead Bay.

Not sure if that's a daily routine thing for the (B) in Brooklyn though.

I believe it is. That way, they can get more trains on the road in less time. This is also evident during Superstorm Sandy and other cold-weather events when you see the R68 (B) trains laid up along the Broadway Express tracks. Now you know where they come from!!

For weekends J put ins at Parsons where do those put ins come from?

Probably and most likely the East New York Yard.

Flatbush layups generally go to Nevins Spur, relay, and go to Livonia Yard. If that is blocked, there are other places they can be turned back to Livonia Yard.

There are also regularly scheduled 2s to New Lots during the day that lay up there, and 5s in the evening to Utica lay up to Livonia Yard.

2s and 5s in the Bronx lay up to East 180th, Unionport, or 239th St. Yard. All the 238 drop outs go to 239 yard, unless 241 requests one to come to the terminal for service. Dyre layups, East 180th drop outs (aka half shuttles), and White Plains (241) layups are generally placed in the yard they belong to, IE #5 trains (6700s and up - even if they're running as 2's) assigned to the East go there or Unionport, while #2 trains (6300-6699) assigned to 239 go there.

Question, when (5) train service to bowling green ends, and shuttle service begins, where do the (5) 's go that have terminated at bowling green

Run in service back to The Bronx to get laid up at the yards up there.

All 5's to Bowling Green return to Dyre.

In the AM Rush...S/B some (4)'s come out Mosholu/Concourse and enter service at Bedford Park Blvd.

In the AM Rush and PM Rush...N/B select (4)'s run from Brooklyn to 167th(via exp or local to Burnside) go OOS and deadhead to the yard.

Also some (4)'s terminate at Bedford Park Blvd and go OOS returning to the yard.
