YankeesPwnMets Posted January 26, 2014 #1 Posted January 26, 2014 Everyone has seen it: that one random person standing by the turnstile looking for someone to swipe them through. Do you guys ever do it for them? I always ignore such people and find them extremely obnoxious. The thing that really pisses me off is that most aren't even homeless. They're just freeloaders look for a ride from someone with an unlimited. Some people actually expect you to do it for them and act as if you owe them something. Once someone just got in my way expecting a free swipe. I'm 6'1" and 180... I'm not going to give you a ride just because you get in my way. I essentially just walked right over him and continued on my way... the nerve of some people While the NYPD cracks down on the idiots who sell swipes, they might as well crack down on the people who attempt to solicit rides from others
Turbo19 Posted January 26, 2014 #2 Posted January 26, 2014 Screw them. Can't afford the fare well tough shit. If someone is truly desperate I'd exercise my discretion and hand them enough for a single ride or go as far as actually purchasing one or them, again if they show need (single women, elderly, youth, etc.). Either way would not use a personal unlimited for that shit.
Juelz4309 Posted January 26, 2014 #3 Posted January 26, 2014 Ive swiped people thru...but it depends on my mood honestly ...If Im ina good mood then ill do it...But I also feel like if I can shell out 112 bucks for my card why cant you shell out a measley 2.50 for a ride??..The struggle is real out here! lol
peacemak3r Posted January 26, 2014 #4 Posted January 26, 2014 Cops are busy cracking down graffiti vandals.
realizm Posted January 26, 2014 #5 Posted January 26, 2014 While the NYPD cracks down on the idiots who sell swipes, they might as well crack down on the people who attempt to solicit rides from others How about the NYPD cracks down on their own crooked cops who senselesly beats on old men for jaywalking infractions or lets loose bullets flying at people in times square who are unarmed?
realizm Posted January 26, 2014 #6 Posted January 26, 2014 Metrocard scammers, I dont like them either. They are stealing revenue and at that jamming metrocard machines to perform their scams, damaging property. Thats a separate issue, that must be handled. That pisses me off to no end. However I know that many customer service agents or even other cops where it pertains to a person who is broke yet must get somewhere in an emergency, they usually would 1) Let them through 2) Tell the person to ask and see if a paying customer will be willing to offer them a swipe. I have seen this happen. How do I know? Because one day a old man was telling a police officer that he had an emergency but had no money. The police officer told him to ask if someone would be willing to pay his fare. Here I am coming from work when he was pleading with the cop in the station. I asked the cop is it OK? He said yes. I swiped him through.
Turbo19 Posted January 26, 2014 #7 Posted January 26, 2014 Cops are busy cracking down graffiti vandals. Right on. These people are asking for more regulation, but how is it possible when the force is deployed elsewhere? Metrocard scammers, I dont like them either. Kudos to you, though if it were I in the situation I'd probably shell out the $2.75 only to not get hassled by PD. f**ked up but shit. Nice to see you perform an act of altruism, speaking as an altruist at heart, saying so because I've been hit by hard times as well in the last few years.

The PO and the MTA collection agent alike told me helping out the senior citizen in that case was fine. It wasn't solicitation in their interpretation. Why? That man ran into a veteran cop who knows his community he serves as a police officer, not an rookie who just got promoted from cadet yesterday.

This society's new way of everything by the book to the fine print is hurting us all. Those who say otherwise just don't know it yet.
DJ MC Posted January 26, 2014 #10 Posted January 26, 2014 Even though this hasn't happened to me yet (sooner or later it will cause it does eventually to everyone), I'll only do it for people who are clearly in need of help. Anyone that can clearly afford the fare, they're on their own.
Fresh Pond Posted January 26, 2014 #11 Posted January 26, 2014 I swipe on occasion, usually once a day...my 1 good deed for the day lol
FamousNYLover Posted January 26, 2014 #12 Posted January 26, 2014 I don't like farebeating either, but I remember when my 30-Day MetroCard broke on MTA-farebox on NICE that send my MetroCard in January 19-something. I explain the situation to 57th st-6th Av station agent and he refused to give me subway slip but no body was entering. It was working when I used on NICE Bus that day and somehow it damaged my MetroCard and I didn't had money then. My Manhattanville depot knows my MetroCard was damaged, so when I took M5 to South Ferry, she gave me transfer, and I was able to get on M15 SBS twice. After that, I swiped my MetroCard at Grand Central's 3rd Av entrance, but it was still damaged, but I was crying because of poor maintence by MTA and NICE Bus, so I had to farebeat and yelled to myself, "NICE Bus broke my MetroCard!" When I have MetroCard, I sometimes swipe for people who board city, NICE Bus or Bee-Line bus with dollar bill and they exchange. Depends and if I not in hurry, I sometimes helped tourists swipe their MetroCard at turnstile or HEET.
Missabassie Posted January 26, 2014 #13 Posted January 26, 2014 Me, HELL no... Gurss I shouldn't be so cold hearted...... or maybe I should......

Broadway Local Posted January 26, 2014 #18 Posted January 26, 2014 I've seen people asking me if I have a metrocard or a monthly unlimited so that I can swipe them in. Seriously it's annoying. I've never let people in though. I just lie that I use a single-ride metrocard with a serious face! And what about opening emergency doors for others? If their metro isn't working I would open it but to farebeat, definitely not!

If their metro isn't working I would open it but to farebeat, definitely not! Be careful don't do that! Regardless of whether the said person's metrocard is working or not, law abiding passenger or not, don't let them in the gate yourself. Don't want to see you get in trouble with the cops. If a passenger has a metrocard that the reader did not pick up, they must go to the collection agent who will check the time of the swipe, then let them in the turnstile or gate.

MHV9218 Posted January 26, 2014 #21 Posted January 26, 2014 Ignoring the racism in this thread, I had an odd situation at Flatbush Av on the train yesterday. Train was about to leave, and as I'm about the go into the turnstile this woman starts saying something to me. I figured she was asking for a swipe, but it turned out she was asking me to hold the door for her. Turned out that we both had enough time to make it on the train, but I stood by the last door anyway. She was incredibly grateful, even if I didn't actually hold the door. C/R was in no great rush anyway, left about a minute after the bell went off.
peacemak3r Posted January 26, 2014 #22 Posted January 26, 2014 I guess to add fuel to the fire, I forgot to answer the initial question. Yes, I do swipe people in from time to time...these people are always friends who just needs a ride home via the MTA and I can't drive them.
Via Garibaldi 8 Posted January 26, 2014 #23 Posted January 26, 2014 Ignoring the racism in this thread... Where at?? I'm 6'4", 210 - 215 lbs and I do the exact same thing... I just either ignore them or look at them like they're crazy. They usually just say something like thank you or something polite and keep it moving once they've taken the hint that I am not even acknowledging them. I had some crazy white guy approach me as I was walking to the BxM1 last night asking me if I could spare some change. As with the Metrocard situation, I hate beggars, and regardless of my mood, I don't like pulling out my wallet or anything so that people can see what I have and don't have. I don't care who they are and what they look like. I used to give here and there but I think there's too many of these damn scammers out here begging and looking for easy money and it's getting rather sickening to be honest. The cops need to start arresting these people. A few weekends ago, I was on a train and there were two scammers in my car and another scammer in the car next to me, so I was literally stuck. I said isn't this something... A blind man, a lady yelling that we were all going to hell and then another guy calling himself playing guitar in the next car. In short, everyone these days is looking for something....
B35 via Church Posted January 26, 2014 #24 Posted January 26, 2014 No I don't swipe other people through... Why should I.... I look at them, smirk, swipe myself through & keep it pushin......
Turbo19 Posted January 26, 2014 #25 Posted January 26, 2014 Where at?? Not pushing it, but what would you consider post #15 in this thread as?
