MHV9218 Posted March 1, 2014 #1 Posted March 1, 2014 This is a hellish intersection. Bus was making a left turn, which is often taken without yielding to pedestrians, ran the woman down and killed her. Union and Meeker. Unit was 4558 running the Q59 around 1:30 am. Woman Hit, Killed By MTA Bus At Busy Williamsburg, Brooklyn IntersectionMarch 1, 2014 11:22 AM NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A woman was struck and killed by a city bus Saturday morning in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As CBS 2’s Janelle Burrell reported, police have identified the victim was Marisol Martinez, 21. Police were called to the junction of Meeker and Union avenues in Brooklyn around 1:30 a.m. upon learning that Martinez had been struck in the intersection. She was walking south on Union Avenue when she was hit by a Q59 Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus, which runs between Rego Park, Queens and the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza in Brooklyn, police said. The bus was making a left turn onto westbound Meeker Avenue at the time, police said. Emergency crews rushed Martinez to Woodhull Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said. Grief-stricken family members gathered at the scene following the accident. They said Martinez was on her way home from work when she was struck. The MTA bus driver, a 50-year-old woman, was shaken up by the accident, but uninjured, police said. The driver remained at the scene, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was probing the accident. The busy intersection of Meeker and Union avenues, located yards away from an exit on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, reopened around 6 a.m. Buses should not be killing people, and buses should definitely not be killing people while making left turns into crosswalks. Some serious questions to be asking this op, I know this area well and I'm not really feeling the usual "poor op, gonna have to piss in a cup" sympathy this time. We'll wait for more details, but from what we know this should not have happened.
BM5 via Woodhaven Posted March 1, 2014 #2 Posted March 1, 2014 My condolences to the family. I do agree that something out of the ordinary has happened here, because you're suppose to yield to the pedestrian. She should've checked to see that her path was clear, however, depending on where she got struck (the victim), she may or may not have seen her. I'm assuming she was hit by the front of the bus by watching the video, so I do think that it should've never happened.
E For Erica Posted March 2, 2014 #5 Posted March 2, 2014 Pedestrians need to pay more attention You don't even know the full story yet. Don't just assume it's the pedestrians fault. & I'm so fed up this happening like what the hell. It's not even safe to cross the street with turning buses anymore. RIP to those that got struck by buses, subways as well. And Again, RIP to the B/O that was a victim of the M14 incident. I'm sick of hearing about deaths, but I know it's not going to stop.
TeeLow Posted March 2, 2014 #6 Posted March 2, 2014 It was hell through there all day Saturday with the Shuttle buses running like a broken water faucet. There's a sharp right turn from Meeker Ave N/E onto Union Ave South where the Shuttle layups park until they resume their eastward run along Metropoliatan Ave. It was really dangerous for pedestrians with the Green/Yellow Cabs, Black Cars, trucks, and passenger cars trying to navigate through an area roughly the size of a football field. Include the Q59 in that 'Vehicle Bowl' it's a wonder no one else was run down, especially the way people cross streets these days. Her death is a tragic loss. MTA will need to consider the traffic flow patterns prior to doing that particular GO in the future because that triangle (Metro/Meeker/Union) is really stressed out congestion wise.
trife86 Posted March 2, 2014 #7 Posted March 2, 2014 You don't even know the full story yet. Don't just assume it's the pedestrians fault. Most likely the B.O. fault. Cause he is the one that stops that vehicle but as you said we don't know the story yet. My comment is because I see a bus coming IM GETTING THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY lol. Either way I'd like to know what we really happened because a left turn as a B.O I have a TON more visibility than I do making a right turn which is literaly almost blind on some bus mirrors

NewFlyer 230 Posted March 2, 2014 #9 Posted March 2, 2014 I noticed these accidents are happening more often. Who is to blame I don't know but being that it was late at night pedestrians and drivers should be more cautious.
Jsunflyguy Posted March 4, 2014 #10 Posted March 4, 2014 Not that I should be feeding the troll but if a bus is turning left into you it is coming from behind. You'd likely not see it in time and have to hope you can feel or hear it approaching.
