Via Garibaldi 8 Posted April 4, 2014 Share #6 Posted April 4, 2014 Nice pics... I've always enjoyed rue Sainte-Catherine in the old part of Montréal when I've visited there...
gmnewlook Posted April 4, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted April 4, 2014 rue Sainte-Catherine is downtown. Old Montreal is near the waterfront at the St. Lawrence river. I live in the eastern part of the city in Pointe-aux-Trembles. So I'm 10 away from Repentigny to the east, 15 minutes from Laval to the north. gmnewlook Posted April 5, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted April 5, 2014 Well, rue Sainte-Catherine was completed in phases. Until the early 20th Century, rue Saint-Jacques, in what is now known as Old Montreal, was downtown, then businesses gradually moved up closer to the mountain to settle on Sainte-Catherine and IIRC, Morgan's (today's La Baie) was the first to do so. Sainte-Catherine runs from Claremont avenue in Westmount a couple of blocks from the Vendôme metro station all the way past Viau Street in the Mercier - Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough, ending at Notre-Dame street. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rue_Sainte-Catherine_%28Montreal%

Minato ku Posted April 12, 2014 Share #12 Posted April 12, 2014 I note several things. No train departure between 14:00 and 16:30 in Deux-Montages line. What are the frequencies of the other suburban line? KFC is called PFK in Quebec
gmnewlook Posted April 13, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted April 13, 2014 Frequencies aren't that great for commuter trains. Two of the lines (Candiac and Mont-St-Hilaire) only run during rush hours and the St-Jérome line runs limited service on weekends. To top it off, on the Vaudreuil line, the CIT La Presqu'Île in Vaudreuil, buses only run during the week, no service on weekends... PFK is Poulet Frit à la Kentucky. During our honeymoon in July '07, my wife and I passed in front of a KFC in Paris near rue Poulet when we went to the Sacré Coeur. I noticed you're in Montrouge, I passed in front of the Centre-Bus Montrouge on rue du Père Corentin while I was there, we were on Avenue du Maine at the Campanile Montparnasse and we'd have supper at Rafaello nearby, one of the owners was from Laval, QC. I also went to do photos at Porte d'Orléans a couple of times during our stay and rode the T3.Je parle français and English, BTW.
Minato ku Posted April 13, 2014 Share #14 Posted April 13, 2014 The Centre Bus de Montrouge is located near Porte d’Orléans in the 14th arrondissement, note that this centre bus of Montrouge is currently closed for work (they are building residential housing above it). I live more than a mile south of Porte d’Orléans in the inner suburban muncipality of Montrouge. Before 1860 Montrouge was much larger municipality and covered a large part of the 14 arrondissement (including the area wher was your hotel), in 1860 the City of Paris was enlarged and absorbed much of Montrouge. Unfortunalety the size of the City of Paris hasn't grew much since then and are now completely disconnected with the reality of the city. The City of Paris is only the inner area of the city, excluding even some dense suburbs like Montrouge (60,000 inh/sq mi).

They also love to ride artics, so I try to take them on STM artic routes like the 69, 139, 467 or the RTL on the 45 and 90. Minato ku Posted May 5, 2014 Share #19 Posted May 5, 2014 Nice pictures of suburban buses. Merging of municipalities is something I would like to hear in France, especially in Paris area. We have too much and too small municipalities.
gmnewlook Posted May 7, 2014 Author Share #20 Posted May 7, 2014 Well, the STL has a fleet of close to or over 300 buses. The three main cities in the Montreal Metropolitain area (Montréal, Laval, Longueuil) each has their own transit authority. Plus private companies that have contracts with CITs and certain municipalities in the north and south shore of Montréal. Here's how it's set up: Suburban systems (North Shore): CIT Laurentides (contracts to Autobus Transcobec (St-Jérôme), Autobus Deux-Montagnes (St-Joseph-du-Lac), Autobus Robert Paquette et Fils (St-Eustache) and Transdev division 21 (Boisbriand) CRT Lanaudière (contracts to Transport Brandon (Joliette), Autobus Brissette et Frères (Berthierville) and Keolis Canada (Repentigny) Urbis Transport Urbain Les Moulins (contracted to Keolis Canada in Terrebonne) Réseau de transport collectif de la MRC L'Assomption (contracted to Keolis Canada in Repentigny) Suburban systems (South Shore, by contractors): Autobus Dufresne (Ste-Martine) --> CIT du Haut-St-Laurent Autobus La Québecoise (Laprairie) --> CIT Le Richelain Groupe Transbus --> CIT La Presqu'Île (Vaudreuil-Dorion) and CIT Sorel-Varennes (Varennes) Transdev --> CIT Roussillon (div. 22 in St-Philippe), Blus Chambly-Richelieu-Carignan (div. 23 in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu), Ville de Sainte-Julie (div. 24 in Boucherville), CIT de la Vallée du Richelieu (div. 30 in St-Mathieu-de-Beloeil) and CIT du Sud-Ouest (div. 33 in Châteauguay) All those suburban systems are managed by the Agence Métropolitaine de transport which also runs the commuter trains. As for municipal mergers, Laval was in 1965, Montreal, Longueuil, Sherbrooke, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières, Quebec City, Lévis and Saguenay all merged in 2002. From Jan. 1st 2002 to Dec 31st 2005, the whole island of Montreal was the City of Montreal until 15 former municipalities held a referendum to take back their municipal autonomy. Same thing happened in Quebec City and Longueuil. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000%E2%80%9306_municipal_reorganization_in_Quebec
