User Posted April 10, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 10, 2014 A bus driver and his two passengers escaped injury Wednesday in a crash involving two vehicles in Babylon that sent the bus into a utility pole, Suffolk County police said.A Suffolk County Transit bus was traveling west in the right lane on Montauk Highway, west of Little East Neck Road, at about 10 a.m. when a car stopped in the left lane turned suddenly in front of it, police said. The bus lost control, went onto the sidewalk and struck the pole, police said, with wires and a transformer landing atop the bus.The driver and the two passengers exited the bus from the back door, with help from the Babylon Fire Department, police said. There were no injuries or tickets issued, police said.Montauk Highway was closed both ways between Little East Neck Road and Tappan Avenue for more than an hour and then westbound only until after noon as repairs to the utility pole were made, police said.Link: http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/cops-bus-crashes-into-utility-pole-in-babylon-1.7654872 http://www.fios1news.com/longisland/node/55520#.U0YCxlcwt8F
traingoat Posted April 10, 2014 Share #2 Posted April 10, 2014 The Fios report gives what happened and how. Now you can see how it occurred and why it occurred. Those wooden poles and transformers are an expensive item to replace.

peacemak3r Posted April 10, 2014 Share #4 Posted April 10, 2014 Hope this is not a case of brake-checking...though who in the right mind would brake-check a bus.

Happens more often than you think, then you have all those distracted drivers who often will stop in the middle of the road for no reason.
mac5689 Posted April 10, 2014 Share #6 Posted April 10, 2014 Another accident in what, two days for EBT. That can't be good on spares. At least in either accident the drivers of the bus don't seem to be at fault. Also that would put the bus on either the S20, S25, S29, or S35. Since they all seem to be in that area at around 10 am. peacemak3r Posted April 10, 2014 Share #7 Posted April 10, 2014 Happens more often than you think, then you have all those distracted drivers who often will stop in the middle of the road for no reason. Being distracted then stopping in the middle of the road for no reason and brake-checking someone are two completely different scenarios.

Being distracted then stopping in the middle of the road for no reason and brake-checking someone are two completely different scenarios. Where did did you get any of that from? The Fios video was very clear on how the accident happened, (for those who don't know Montauk Hwy in that area is a 4 lane at grade road, 2 lanes going east 2 lanes going west). There was a car in the left lane waiting to turn into a business a car behind that made a sudden move around the stopped car waiting to turn into the right lane, clipping the bus that was traveling in the right lane. A lot of this section of Montauk Hwy has traffic stopped in the left lane waiting to turn with traffic backing up behind it because they can't get into the right lane. Traffic also gets slow in the right lane because of traffic slowing to take rights into businesses, combine this with cars that will dart from the left lane to the right darting around slowing traffic turning left and right expecting/making cars not to hit them... Combine Long Islands compulsion to speed with darting in and out of traffic... there are a lot of serious accidents on this road.
