R188 Discussion Thread

There's not enough R62As at Corona to fully equip the (4) and (6)/<6> lines. It's either the (4)or the (6)/<6>. Can't be both.

This has been discussed over and over and over and over again. The most logical placement would be to the (6)<6>, so use of the LED indicators can be best utilized. The (6)<6> currently runs 40 trainsets at any given time during peak hours and Westchester yard holds approximately 430 R142A's. The (7)<7> runs 32 trains while Corona yard holds 409 R62A's. Transfering ALL of Corona's R62A's would just be enough to provide full rush hour service on the (6)<6>, spare factor aside. Where they'll come up with extra cars for the spare factor, I don't know. But I am guessing that they'll only need 360 of Westchester's R142A's for the conversion, that leaves 7 full trainsets that could function as the spare. I don't know how many more times I'll have to explain this, but I'll keep doing it until it actually happens.

Obviously not, 60th was designed for subway cars as opposed to Steinway being built for trolleys. I just wonder how 'fast' those R142As will be allowed to run compared to the R62As.

Most likely just as fast, counting if tunnel doesn't start to deteriorate at faster rate, because the dimensions are almost the same and cars are lighter.

On a day like today, its obvious that the R142A test is canceled because of the weather.

BTW, what about the strip maps? Are they going to make strip maps for the (7) or replace them with FIND displays like those seen on the R160's?

Strip maps would obviously be cheaper and work basically just as well.

I agree. If any of the not-R160 NTTs were to get FINDs, it should be the mainline R142s, especially since those get rerouted all the time.

They need to hurry up and put finds on the (2) and (5) R142's. It sucks having to operate a (5) and it's a (2) train set because it increases the chances of riders having to come up and ask me questions like "does the (5) go to fulton st?" when the strip map should easily tell them that. I hope that it happens sometime in the near future.

I agree, especially seeing how many (5) trains are switched from being (2) trains. That should've been done a long time ago. In fact they should redo all of the FINDS on the R142s because it looks really tacky seeing how they cut out little pieces of paper and stuck it over the old destination signs... lol

Does anyone know if the R142As will be rehabbed at all before going over to the (7)? I mean those trains are going to take a beating on the (7) with all the folks that ride that line.

@via: tacky yes, but cheaper and cost efficient to replace segments of the strip map with a patch than to keep reprinting the entire map just for a few changes for a few months or such.

The main point of the R142s on the 2/5 is for the electronic signs. the strip map inside is less of a concern. Better confusion over strip maps than wrong side signs on R62as. It's not a major issue about the strip maps. that should be when it comes time for those cars to get their mid life 'tune up'.

Yeah, but when will that be? Besides, think about all of the man hours that are spent having to replace segments of it. It adds up over time and if the FINDs could be replaced once it would be a better experience overall for the passengers. I mean what good are the electronic signs if they are out of use because they are for the (2) train instead of the (5)? On a side note, I like the automated buses on the M16 and M34. Had to go to the DMV this morning there on 34th and 8th and it is nice that they have that set up.

They run the (6). They already take a beating every day. Just sayin'.

True, but that (7) train... I'm telling you, I've been on a subway line like that before. Really is insane riding that line.

Updating the strip maps takes the same amount of money and manpower as it does to replace the ads in all the trains. It's not like they use different workers to put those stickers onto the cardboard maps. Sure, it's less work for those guys, but at most, all it saves is a couple hundred bucks in printing costs.

I rode it every day for the past four years before entering college. I know what I'm talking about.

See, the thing is, you need to know when to ride the line to encounter the fewest crowds. Whenever that's not an option... sucks for you.

http://www.nycsubway.org/cars/a-div-new-tech.html they are taking 350 cars from the Kawasaki R142As they have 600 so they will have 300 cars left on the (6) line if you read it, it shows that. they arent taking any of the R142s at all and the idea that some of the (2)and(5)s are going to the (6)isnt true they will run both R62a and the left over R142a
