jon2305 Posted October 10, 2015 Share #5701 Posted October 10, 2015 Yup we had a shortage of trains on the line now a set from westchester went to Corona does anybody happen to know the set numbers for the train? From what I've seen, the sets that came from 240th st are all still on the and have been there for about a year now, haven't seen nothing go to the as opposed to the converted R188s.
CTK246 Posted October 10, 2015 Share #5702 Posted October 10, 2015 The trains have the same programs as the mainline IRT cars. Yes, but they probably use R160 code as the software backbone, considering they wanted R188s to use CBTC, code which already exists on some R160s. It's easier to copy the program than to rewrite it.
Tech And Transit Posted October 11, 2015 Share #5703 Posted October 11, 2015 CBTC testing again. R188 set 7860-7870 at Mets - Willets Point.

Tech And Transit Posted October 11, 2015 Share #5705 Posted October 11, 2015 This sets taken out for testing right, not a new set? Yes it's a factory set that was taken out for testing. It originally entered service in May 2014 for about a month before it was taken out. The Thales and MTA employees I talked to today said this set won't be in service until 2017, presumably when CBTC goes online.

Then thats a good sign, means CBTC work will continue and be quick, doesn't matter if its not in service until 2017.

Yep, this set has been making progress quick. Each time I've seen it it seems to have had more systems or software added to it. It's a very good sign.
Javier Posted October 11, 2015 Share #5708 Posted October 11, 2015 Question, how does a set go under CBTC testing?
Tech And Transit Posted October 11, 2015 Share #5709 Posted October 11, 2015 It's simple, they take one set out of service, install CBTC components in it and test them. This process will continue until 2017 when CBTC goes online.
Javier Posted October 11, 2015 Share #5710 Posted October 11, 2015 Dont the R188's already have CBTC components?

If the has more than enough trains to make service why send R62A to Corona when it's going back to Westchester..

Only reason I could think of is that a train was taken out of service due to either a repairmen or a CBTC installment
VIP Posted October 12, 2015 Share #5716 Posted October 12, 2015 You mean 14-15 sets not cars. And its 16 now because apparently a Westchester set that originally came from 240th Street made its way to the a couple weeks ago due to a shortage apparently. so they have a 10 car train running on the . ?

Priincenene Posted October 12, 2015 Share #5719 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) LOL Westcheater ^^ I see more converted sets out during rush hour than factory sets, and the day of the 34 St opening Corona Yard was smart enough to put a factory built R188 set as the first train to enter 34th St. It was set 7877. Javier Posted October 12, 2015 Share #5721 Posted October 12, 2015 Is it possible that the could run a 10 car train in case something were to happen?
Fresh Pond Posted October 12, 2015 Share #5722 Posted October 12, 2015 Is it possible that the could run a 10 car train in case something were to happen? Yes and it was done with the redbirds. The single cars had no A/C while the married cars did, so often they would run 10 car trains if it got too hot. Odds of it happening now is almost non-existent, but it did happen
Tech And Transit Posted October 12, 2015 Share #5723 Posted October 12, 2015 2111-2115 heading to Westchester Yard I saw it today on the 7 Not In Service. I beleive it was coupled to 2036, I forgot the single car's #. It made a few NIS rounds until returning to Corona later that day.
