I’ve often seen the <Q> sign on R46s since they started running that lone (R) train to 96th that comes back south as a (Q).

Speaking of which, I boarded car #9792 on the (Q) at 34th this morning. Meanwhile across the platform, I saw car #8926 in all its loud Siemens glory departing as part of an (R) train. There will be plenty more of that to come, I’m sure.

I rode a R46 <Q> train today, and yes it had the diamond symbol that's why I used it here lol.

Before in the 1970s I think.. the (B) service to Grand Street to Brighton Beach was Suspended I don't Know why but thats how the <Q> was created but, A month ago I saw a <Q> Train on sea beach so I think It could represent "Via Sea Beach."

Jamaica set on the (Q)? I think you mean #8792?

actually yes 9792. A Jamaica R160 runs on the 96 St (R) and therefore becomes that southbound (Q) (either the 8:08AM or the 8:15AM departure from 96 St)

Okay, I thought it was a separate statement from the one above, no idea he was referring to that specific run. I thought it was unusual either way knowing that all the Alstom sets transferred maybe save one for CBTC along Culver.

It could be 8792 one day. It got moved to Jamaica with the rest of its mates. None of the R160s with Alstom propulsion are at CIY anymore (save for that one set that’s doing testing on the Culver el, though I’m sure its time will come too).

It definitely was 9792. Yes, a Jamaica R160 set from the (R) to the (Q). Prior to the fleet switch, that was why you’d see an R46 train on the southbound (Q). But now that R46s are all but gone from Jamaica, they’re still doing the same thing, only with R160s. Who knows, on some days it’ll be done with a set of R160s formerly based in CIY.

Basically, reversed. Although, none of the Alstom units run on the (Q) . Only one runs peak direction, one trip after becoming an (R) to 96 St.

By reversed: the Alstom units becomes the 46s while that one R46 is an Alstom 160.

The <Q> existed much longer than that. The original <Q> in the diamond first appeared in 1986 after Transit completely dropped all double-letter designations. Before then, it was called the QB (prior to 1973, there was also a (QJ); essentially QB stood for “Q to Bridge” and QJ stood for “Q to Jamaica” (via the Montague Tunnel and Nassau St). Also, before 1967, there was a plain Q train that ran via Brighton express. This was replaced by the (D) train in 1967. The (D), not the (B), ran from Grand St to Brighton Beach (and Coney Island during off peak) in the 1970s and until 2001. The (B) ran via the West End Line (currently the (D)) during this same time period.

There were two periods where the (B) and (D) each had to be split into two separate service due to rehab work on the bridge. These were 1986-88 and 2001-04. From 86 to 88, there were the 6th Ave (B) and (D) to/from 34th St and also ( B ) and ( D ) services from Astoria (B only) and Midtown that ran via Broadway Express then over the Brooklyn routes. From 01-04, the same pattern ran, but the ( B ) was called the (W) and the ( D ) was called the (Q). Between 88 and 01, the former <Q> joined the (B) and (D) on 6th Avenue (while the Broadway bridge tracks were closed) and was designated the (orangeQ); it was this service that became the <Q> in 2001, then the (B) in 2004. Because both the (B) and <Q> ran weekdays only, it made more sense to unify them, and for the full-time (D) and (W) to be unified into one service. That's how we got the current (B) and (D) services.

I think it's safe to say the R32s are retiring in the spring and NOT when the R211s arrive. If the 32s were staying I think they would have stopped retiring cars around the 100-110 mark.

Also there's an R46 (R) about to arrive at Bay Ridge-95th street if anybody is hunting one..

So is there a list of the ones still active?

IDK the vehicle numbers of the cars still active, but there's 80 R32 cars still in service. There was 222 R32 cars active when the R179 order started.

With that being said, the R46 (R) I rode was the ONLY 46 (R) train I saw. Transferred to the (C) at Jay Street and guess what was pulling in... an R32 (C) train!

I got my first ride on an R160 (R) this morning. I don’t ride the (R) too often, but when I do, I always end up with an R46 while seeing R160s going in the opposite direction (Forest Hills bound).

As for the R32s, how many of the 80 active cars are still assigned to the (C) and how many are for the (A)?

If that’s the case, then they better pray that they will have enough cars to fill in the gaps.

And are they going to preserve at least 10 cars for some movie shoots?

The R42s managed to survive with only 50 cars left in-service for almost a decade. Same thing applies to the 24 M2s on the New Haven Line that we’re kept in service for a few years after the M8s came in. I wouldn’t say it’s the end yet...
