Or maybe 6341-6345 with 6349 inserted just to keep the numbering consistent to make one of the six car (S) trains. Then repair any minor damage from 6366-6370 (if any) and leave it on the main line

Bingo.  I was waiting for someone to say that.  It's too early for sure to say which cars of the 5 car set are done or salvageable.  Initial reports I heard is the first 3 are done.  Certainly the car involved as the car melted in most areas.  Likely the 2 in front and behind it had heavy residual damage.

We've saw that the deal with the completed GCT-TSq shuttle project was to operate two 6 car trains and of course we were all asking how?  Sure, for now two trains of R62A's but what happens in the future when that fleet is retired?  We may have our answer now, however we need a couple of spare trains naturally.  Our Car equipment people an do some amazing things.  I can see them splicing those 2 surviving cars into 2 current 5 car units.  They can do whatever rewiring is necessary to make it work. And they can.

Well you have the R262 order coming around the corner. A few sets can go to the 42nd Street (S), given that there's 504 cars in the base order and all lines on the Main Line are configured in ten-car trains. That leaves four six-car trains.

So on Thursday, there were just these two "retired" trains of R-32s back in (C) service...Hmmm...

3501/00-3716/17-3628/3669-3381/80.

3574/75-3376/77-3888/89-3775/74.

FWIW, at least as of March 26, 2020 there were (technically and) again 74 cars in the R-32 fleet.

Time will tell if this continues.  There were still 58 in the fleet on Monday the 23rd.

Franklin Av mis-match?

basically, the original 3669 was damaged in a derailment along the Franklin shuttle in 1974. meanwhile, 3628-29 were involved in a collision with an R42 in 1971. 3629 was scrapped, and 3668 was renumbered to 3669 (which is the one that @MeeP15-9112 is talking about), and the new 3669 (aka ex-3668) was paired up with 3628, and voila. that's why 3628-3669 are paired up like that.

The R32 fleet is NOT retired. For the final time, these cars are put ins. (Substitute, supplement, and spares) most are being stored and some are stripped or awaiting stripping of parts.

R142's cant be arranged in less or more then 5 cars. Each car in one five set has a different system for each part of the train.

NTT B cars are interchangeable. A cars and CBTC "C cars" are sketchy. All cars in a set have APUs/LVPS/batteries. Either all A cars or all B cars have compressors. Too much redundant auxiliary equipment other railroads skip making NYCT cars extra heavy.

False. R142's can run in 4 to 6 car units.

The middle car in a 5 car unit doesn't actually provide anything to another car. It's always the B car next to the A car.

When the C cars were ordered for the R188s, these were lighter cars missing a number of parts for the "A-B pairing". With those cars, they actually pass through on both ends so that the A and B cars between them communicate. This is why the C car is always found between an A and B car in a unit, and once again the B car in the middle of a unit don't marry with any other cars (as to the question of why they didn't just have two C cars on the new orders, my best guess is consistency with the R142A's which were converted?)

Would you happen to know if this is also true for R160s and R179s?
