Fleet Swap Discussion Thread

Been reading this thread off and on for a while. It seems that some folks don’t know how things work in CED-RTO land. Let’s say I transferred 10 trains to another yard to supplement the receiving yards fleet . If the transferred fleet is foreign to the receiving yards equipment normally would use 8 trains of the new fleet, maybe 9 trains in a pinch, for service . That 10th train would be a spare in case something happens to one of the 8 trains in use. Broken glass, door problem, any mechanical problem and can use a 5 car unit to replace the problem unit as it’s repaired. If 9 trains are running my spare factor is decreased. If I use all 10 transferred trains I’m screwed if something happens and I have no spare. Try explaining that to your superiors. There is no excuse for such a rookie mistake . Ten trains may have been transferred from one yard to another but common sense says that you don’t run all of them at the same time. The real world and the railfans world are not one and the same. My take on the issue as a former transfer man. Carry on.

Temporary, eventually, the (F) will need those cars back for full restoration of service and CBTC.

I don’t think the (F) will be back to full service for a long time. Maybe an increase to six-minute headways (the max that Stillwell Av can handle) as long as the Kings Highway Switches are out. And due to the pandemic-related ridership levels, I don’t see the (F) returning to more frequent service until at least the Culver CBTC project (weekend work) is competed.

the same can be said for the (L) considering a large percentage of the ridership are from the hipsters who choose not to work and drink all day in public. Hence why the (L) is only running 1/3 of the usual weekday service and it freed up the R143s and R160s for the (J) to fill in for the R179s. Maybe the Rockaway Park (A) trips could have been still placed on hiatus and focus efforts to run close to full (C) service.

There are other options other than turning trains at Stillwell or Kings Hwy. They could turn the trains usually bound for Kings Hwy at 18 Av which would give queens and mannattan stations regular service.

This is kind of strange... over the past 20 minutes, I’ve seen 2 R160s in a row on the (Q), heading Coney Island-bound, and 1 R160 deadheading vía the express tracks on Brighton (Couldn’t see any of their numbers), also towards Coney Island... are any of those actually transfers to Coney Island Yard right now?

At this time, there's none, could be a train that was OOS. The other 3 are used (A) : Pitkin Yard as loaners.

Why cant Pitkin inspect them?

Pikin probably doesn't have the parts to maintain and work on the R160s.

I don't think 18th Ave has a crew room, so for that reason alone I don't think (F) trains can turn there. They could turn them at Church Ave, I think they did that when the Culver EL stations were getting rehabbed.

The ones in revenue service were not transfers. The deadhead could have been coming back to CI from Pitkin.

I remember a crew room there (a very small one) when we doing a shuttle for a G.O. 8 years ago, Trying to remember if it was ours, or we were borrowing it from Stations.

(R160) They do not have the parts required to repair them and the maintainers are not trained on the equipment.

Because Pitkin already inspects the R46, Jamaica has the responsibility of how well the cars perform.

Because this is how transit conducts their business.

No crew and dispatcher facility at 18th Ave.

The F runs at 4-5 minute rush hour headway.  With the small percentage of current ridership, they do not need service that frequent and get the work done with little interruption.

Same with the L, they just don't need 4 minute headways either.

And nobody hit me with "Social Distancing".  Ridership isn't 25% of normal yet.

I'm asking Mr. happy283 a question...…...who gave you this list?  I'm curious.

And these are not Pitkin R160's...…..They are JAMAICA  R160's  (and possibly CI) R160's on loan to the A line.

This is the list seen a couple pages back on this thread. I just added the numbers that users has since reported were at Pitkin. They are temporarily Pitkin R160s while Jamaica or CI is where they will eventually return to.
