N6 Limited Posted August 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2014 NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Cuomo signed a new law in Manhattan on Saturday that makes the speed limit 25 MPH. He was flanked by two traffic signs that read "speed limit 25." The current speed limit was 30. The legislation is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's "vision zero" plan to try to end traffic deaths in the city. The governor told an audience that included families of New Yorkers who died on city streets that a reduction of even 5 mph translates into about half as many deaths. Cuomo said last year's 176 deaths are a frightening statistic. He said it amounts to a "crisis." "We will change this law. We will make this city a safer city... It will save lives... And that's what government is all about" Cuomo said. The new limit goes into effect in 3 months. It will expand our coffers... And that's what this government is all about"
peacemak3r Posted August 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2014 People here in New York, heck in the entire US, should start doing what other countries are doing and have mandatory dash cams or something because quite frankly I don't know how many times I had to avoid a pedestrian jay-walking, not abiding to pedestrian lights, not looking both ways crossing the street, and other small things that create these types of accidents and fatal accidents. On top of that, I wonder how many city officials will actually follow this new speed limit...oh wait, no one follows the current 30 either. How about that. N6 Limited Posted August 16, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted August 16, 2014 How do the dash cam's work? Just a digital cam you stick on your dash?

peacemak3r Posted August 17, 2014 Share #5 Posted August 17, 2014 How do the dash cam's work? Just a digital cam you stick on your dash? It can vary I guess, I'd just setup a GoPro on my dash for my safety and proof of any attempted frauds. Hopefully this will work. I would only accept this to work if law enforcement and city officials abide by these laws when there is no emergency on site. After saying that, they will not follow it anyway. theaveragejoe Posted August 18, 2014 Share #7 Posted August 18, 2014 How about teaching New Yorkers on not to jaywalk?

Joel Up Front Posted August 19, 2014 Share #9 Posted August 19, 2014 How about teaching New Yorkers on not to jaywalk? How about asking Canadians to not say "eh" at the end of every sentence?
Quill Depot Posted August 22, 2014 Share #10 Posted August 22, 2014 What about when you get running at 40+ speeds on First. Does he know that all of Manhattan isn't stop and go... only 90% is!
rsperez93 Posted October 24, 2014 Share #11 Posted October 24, 2014 How about teaching New Yorkers on not to jaywalk? I agree, I don't think changing the speed limit will stop jay walkers. If anything it can possibly increase the number of jay walkers in the city because traffic is moving a lot slower. I say enforce violation of pedestrian laws rather than drivers violating traffic laws.
peacemak3r Posted October 27, 2014 Share #12 Posted October 27, 2014 Changing the speed limit was not meant to decrease jay-walkers. It was to penalize drivers because they think all pedestrian accidents are the driver's fault. Every since the installations of those "speed cameras/traps," I've had to avoid so many sudden stops and slamming of brakes.
N6 Limited Posted October 27, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted October 27, 2014 If I had a dash cam to catch all the stupid things pedestrians and cyclists do. Just the other day on Atlantic ave, this guy on a bike just cruses across southbound @ Ralph Ave as if the light was red for westbound traffic. Now, if someone would have hit him, then it would be the drivers fault?
rsperez93 Posted November 3, 2014 Share #14 Posted November 3, 2014 What driver is actually gonna abide the new law? I am going to keep driving 30 mph. Luckily I don't drive in Manhattan. I am disappointed this is gonna make effects soon. I see no point in owning a vehicle if you can't even drive past 25 mph.
peacemak3r Posted November 3, 2014 Share #15 Posted November 3, 2014 It doesn't matter if you're in Manhattan or not, this is city wide.
rsperez93 Posted November 3, 2014 Share #16 Posted November 3, 2014 Well, lets just see how well this will do for the city. I wouldn't be surprised if the speed limit drops again.

N6 Limited Posted November 10, 2014 Author Share #19 Posted November 10, 2014 People don't realize just how SLOW 25mph is, especially those that don't drive.
peacemak3r Posted November 11, 2014 Share #20 Posted November 11, 2014 BrooklynBus pointed this out in the other thread. The 30 limit averages out to 25 mph as it is, now the average will drop and what? That'll slow down buses as well.
rsperez93 Posted November 16, 2014 Share #21 Posted November 16, 2014 People don't realize just how SLOW 25mph is, especially those that don't drive. Exactly. We won't know exactly how well this will workout for the whole city until further notice. Lets see if it actually makes a big difference.
peacemak3r Posted November 17, 2014 Share #22 Posted November 17, 2014 It's funny because, recently after the speed limit was put into effect, my area's jay-walking occurrences have sprung up. Coincidence? I think not.

Wasn't DeBlaiso and his entourage seen blowing through stop signs before or something? Also, I think I saw on Facebook that Queens Blvd was going to be dropped to 25 too. Can you imagine? peacemak3r Posted November 22, 2014 Share #24 Posted November 22, 2014 I definitely can't imagine Queens Blvd doing 25. I am glad that some areas still have at the very least 30 posted.
