realizm Posted September 8, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2014 (CNN) -- A respiratory virus is sending hundreds of children to hospitals in Missouri and possibly throughout the Midwest and beyond, officials say. The unusually high number of hospitalizations reported now could be "just the tip of the iceberg in terms of severe cases," said Mark Pallansch, a virologist and director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Viral Diseases. "We're in the middle of looking into this," he told CNN on Sunday. "We don't have all the answers yet." Ten states have contacted the CDC for assistance in investigating clusters of enterovirus -- Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Kentucky. Enteroviruses, which bring on symptoms like a very intense cold, aren't unusual. They're actually common. When you have a bad summer cold, often what you have is an enterovirus, he said. The season often hits its peak in September.Read more: Source

realizm Posted September 14, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted September 14, 2014 You know? Recently someone in the CDC accidentally found some sealed containers of smallpox the BBC reported on their site. Smallpox is no joke, it will certainty kill you. If it went into the wrong hands one only knows what sort of pandemic that would have brought! Deaths worldwide for that matter... realizm Posted September 14, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted September 14, 2014 Uh oh. The virus outbreak just hit us in New York: http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/12/health/enterovirus-new-york/index.html?hpt=hp_t2"(CNN) -- More than a dozen cases of Enterovirus D68 have been confirmed in New York state, according to officials. "EV-D68 is causing cases of severe respiratory illness ... sometimes resulting in hospitalization, especially among children with asthma," the NYS Department of Health said in a statement Friday.Enteroviruses are quite common in September; the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 10 to 15 million people are infected by these viruses each year. But doctors believe this particular type of enterovirus, Enterovirus D68, is causing more serious problems than others have in years past.As of September 11, more than 80 cases in six other states -- Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky and Missouri -- have been confirmed to be EV-D68, according to the CDC. New York is the first state in the Northeast with confirmed cases."
