NYC law prohibits horse-drawn carriage drivers from working their horses in snow, ice, heavy rain or other slippery conditions. But that didn’t stop them from working a horse at a St. Patrick’s Day Parade during a snowstorm.

TheirTurn told several police officers who lined the parade route that the carriages drivers were breaking the law, but none of them took action.

The presence of two marching bands also didn’t keep the carriage operators away, even though the city’s horse-drawn carriage operator’s manual includes marching bands on the list of stimuli that spook horses.

In fact, it was a drum that spooked a NYC carriage horse named Smoothie, who bolted down 59th street, crashed into a tree and died in front of dozens of onlookers.

The carriage operators were very much aware of the risk, which explains why they held the reins.

As carriage operators illegally worked a horse in a parade in Queens, several others were breaking the law on the snowy streets of Manhattan.

Animal rights activists with NYCLASS, PETA and Long Island Orchestrating for Nature (LION) also participated in the parade, bringing animal costumes instead of a living animal.

The carriage drivers thanked the village of Sunnyside, Queens, by leaving behind a pile of horse manure on main street. Not to worry, NYC tax dollars will pay for the clean up.

1. If you live in NYC, please ask your City Council Member to support the bill to ban horse-drawn carriages (Intro 573). If you live elsewhere, please sign their petition.

2. To learn more about the issue and keep apprised of news, subscribe to the weekly newsletter of the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages.

3. Watch the award-winning documentary film BLINDERS to see why people have been fighting for years to take the horses out of NYC:

Can we just ban you instead? Not from the site, just in general. You know, ban you from giving tourists tours of the subway and from going to transit public hearings. You seem quite happy destroying someone else's livelihood, why should we not give you the same treatment?

It's a horse, doing the exact same thing it's species has been doing for thousands of years. Most of which no one gave a crap. I have to hike a total of three miles in the snow today to get to and from work. Where's my sympathy? Where is everyone fighting for me?

Besides if we do ban horses, you know where they'll end up? In the meat department of a super market in Quebec. PEOPLE EAT HORSES!

All horses will not end up in meat house. All horses are being transfer to rescue farms and sanctually offer to adopt horses.

Daily News never did carriage horse story during cold weather when temperature reach 18*F or 90*F weather, which is illegal for them to operate.

Daily News never even told carriage horse they're not suppose to work according to Horse Carriage driver's manual.

Some folks think keeping on Central Park will work and built stables, but it wouldn't work.

You have to take away every large public spaces like Sheeps Meadow, Great Lawn and North Lawn to built stables for every carriage horses.

Even the spokewoman for Carriage Horse Industry broke a law working in snowstorm. NYPD has suspended hack line on March 1st when heavey snow came.

Carriage drivers know they're suppose to obey the law, but most choose not to because there was no cops. NYPD is responsible for carriage horse's policy, but former ACPA Law Enforcement Officer never told them the policy.

There are difference between working farm and rescue farm.

Horses in working farms end up in slaughter, not rescue farm.

Many animal rights activist knows PETA kills Animals, but only PETA. Other Animal Rights Activist wouldn't do such thing.

Animals are happy life in rescue farms in Equine Advocate Farm, Catskills Farm Sanctually and Woodstuck Farm Sanctually. They're all being taken off.

Humane Society of United States has lots of rescue farms which are protected from becoming slaughter.

Mod, can you lock this, please.

I just only want to share the article.

I do not give tourists tour of subway.

Majority of tourists and folks are against Carriage Ride.

Salt Lake City banned Horse-Drawn Carriage because of too many carriage horse accidents.

Rescue farms are freedom farms.

Horses have been used this way since the dawn of civilization. I know "animal cruelty... blah blah blah", but you can't just destroy an industry without repercussions. Why don't you tell me what these people who drive the horse drawn carriages should do?

NYClass is offering all carriage drivers to drive this, but they refuse.

This is antique electric car.

Our idea for NYC tourism -- that doesn't use and abuse animals.

HorselessEcarriage.jpg?1418616251

The brass Horseless eCarriage made it's debut at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. Go here or here for more photos and

.

Phasing out the use of horse carriages and replacing them with 21st Century "Horseless eCarriage" for current carriage drivers is one possible solution that will preserve employment for everyone in the industry.  No one is losing a job -- they are simply moving to a modern, humane alternative.

Adoption homes will be offered to all 200 carriage horses, provided by NYCLASS, ASPCA, HSUS and numerous organizations and individuals. No horse will be sent to slaughter.

There are viable alternatives to NYC horse drawn carriages that will avoid the safety and quality of life issues currently faced by New York City's residents and its horses. NYCLASS commissioned The Creative Workshop in Dania Beach, Florida to design and create a fully electric, vintage-replica vehicle prototype to replace the horse drawn carriages. These electric cars can provide rides for tourists, offer jobs to workers currently in the horse carriage industry with the potential for higher wages, and maintain the historic and romantic feel of the tours.

Important Facts about the Horseless eCarriage
  • The Horseless eCarriage meets all existing US DOT requirements mandated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including seat belts, brake systems and other crash protections, which are not possible in a horse drawn carriage. Read more about the safety features here.
  • Authentically styled and constructed to replicate turn of the century cars with a target build date of 1909.
  • Ergonomic body design provides comfortable and safe 8 passenger seating.
  • Cars will be propelled solely by electric power. Lithium-ion batteries provide cutting edge, clean energy.
  • Raised "stadium" seating, "parasol" convertible top and lowered driver cockpit area provide 360degree viewing.
  • All-weather driving: Heated seats and roll down clear sides provide comfort in cold weather, snow or rain.
  • Suspension and steering designed to provide authentic "turn of the century" drive experience.
  • Up to 10 hours of drive time per charge.
  • Cars will each be personalized to create a palette of unique and aesthetically pleasing cars.
  • Regenerative deceleration charges batteries whenever car is slowing down.
  • Cars can offer tours while cruising at 5mph, and will be able to keep up with city traffic on the street with speeds up to 30 mph.
  • The 21st Century Horseless eCarriage can be manufactured locally in one of the five boroughs, creating jobs and bringing a new industry to the city.
  • Potential to offer trips beyond Manhattan -- bringing tourism to Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

The eco-friendly replicas will substantially increase revenue for New York City, encourage tourism and be completely cruelty-free. The e-Carriage will put a spotlight on New York City as the leader in urban ecotourism, creating a unique and memorable experience for visitors from all corners of the world. If there's any question about the inhumanity and of forcing carriage horses to work in dangerous NYC traffic, why not transition to the kind alternative?

This is democracy, not socialism. We can't just implement these restrictions on people's lives. The government should not be controlling peoples lives first off. If you all really don't like the horseless carriages, just set out a campaign to boycott them.

Carriage Horse Industry, Teammaster Local 553 is not true union because they're drivers are not cover by contract.

There are two stables near dangerous Lincoln Tunnel and West Side Highway. Carriage drivers has no respect for tourists safety because they make illegal U-turn coming out from East Drive at 60th St, well as cutting off other motorists.

That carriage driver in video was suspended because he was ARRESTED twice. NYPD arrested him for using fake document to hide his/her horse was very sick which NYPD notice. Same driver was arrested for Drunk Driving on Carriage with tons of beers hidden from carriage. You know you will get arrested if you drive while drunk on motor-vehicle.

Lol @ this....

Ultmately, what is the point of this post?

Your whole narrative/stance is one of, the horses shouldn't be out there working the streets in the first place....

Pointing out how irresponsible the horse's handler is should be irrelevant to you....

My point? You're making this about the handler(s), to fortify your stance that horses shouldn't be working out on NYC's roads as people carriers, which is disgusting.... Damn agenda frauds make me sick.... Of course you & your types purposely fail to mention that some of those horses would be put down if they weren't working....

That would be like putting YOU down, since you don't work... Go run tell that.

How is it eco-friendly? Doesn't it technically use coal or natural gas or whatever depending on the power plant it's from.
