Eric B Posted September 25, 2008 Share #27 Posted September 25, 2008 Here ya go: Yeah; that's more like it! Well, I think the brightness of the lamp, and the font used has an impact on this. The ocr font currently used isn't appropriate, in my opinion. Something more like Arial would be better, and alleviate the problem you're talking about. the letter will be thinner than the background no matter what the font. (and isn't Arial even thinner than whatever is used now?) In my opinion, color needs to travel more than text, but legibility need sto be enhanced as much as possible.I think we can at least agree that the current R142/160 ones were a mistake. The color would be just the shape, and it would be enough to project the color. The route designation is what is most important. they should just take the red ones out and perhaps use them in stations to tell which train is coming, or something like that. (They would only be good along the 7th Ave lione, and the 142A and 143's since they are actually more orange, could go on 6th Av.)

N-Trizzy2609 Posted September 27, 2008 Share #30 Posted September 27, 2008 I propose putting LED Fiber optic broads with the destination so people won't get confused. Do you how many people ended up in Mott Avenue instead of Lefferts Blvd. or how do you know that train isn't going to Dyer Avenue? Side LCD aren't the best when people see them. Example: : Euclid Avenue or: : Far Rock Via JFK
Radioguy Posted September 27, 2008 Share #31 Posted September 27, 2008 Honestly, the two lines should have different letters, bullet shapes or colors. I made that mistake several times as a kid, and changing at Rockaway Blvd wasn't the nicest experience compared to Broadway-Nassau or Jay St-Borough Hall. Eric B Posted October 29, 2008 Share #32 Posted October 29, 2008 OK; here now is what I was talking about: I actually created this right after this discussion, and wanted to make it my avatar. But Whike custom avatars are mentioned on the User CP, there is no place where you can select it from your computyer. On the signature picture, you could, but it doesn't allow animated avatars. (I wonder why). So just now, I thought of the gallery. Since all the other gallery pics are real lif photos; I hope it wasn't wrong to upload this there. Just that I have to set up a whole new webspace as AOL ftp is shutting down Friday, so it made no sense to upload the image there, and I couldn't wait to show it off. (also have to move my somewhat respected Subway pages. They won't be there next week!)
INDman Posted October 30, 2008 Share #33 Posted October 30, 2008 WOW!! That would be very cool to see on a robo train. If the train was OOS would it be blank like the new techs are now or would it say something? And whats up with the P, is it a split 8th Ave- Nassau route? Eric B Posted October 30, 2008 Share #35 Posted October 30, 2008 The P would be the proposed Jamaica Center-Penn Station route that would run when the LIRR is out dut to strike or whatever. It runs on the Jamaica line, through chrystie and then switchesover to 8th Av. It would not really be able to say any words, as this would be constructed justlike the current red ones, with the circle, diamond, and single character text field as separate dot matrices. It is not one single full square screen like the one on the 110A. So you can have the letter/number in the text field, and any words would have to also fit in that same text field by making them smaller, but then you still would not be able to fit any words, and the character swould be too thin and smallfor the LED pixel resolution. I had sent in a suggestion for this years ago, and it was the only one that did not come back rejected. So maybe they are looking into it. The technology should be more available and affordable now. So hopefully, on the 179's, at least.
Joe Posted October 30, 2008 Share #36 Posted October 30, 2008 Does the P actually exist on rollsigns? I assume it would be an express service too, I don't know what those LIRR commuters would do if they got out at Alabama Av.
Eric B Posted October 30, 2008 Share #37 Posted October 30, 2008 It was not on any rollsigns, except for the current 32/38 ones which had unassigned "extra" letters in white. It's not programmed into the NTT's either. So this was just to show what could be done with the LED's. It would have been nonstop, I think to somewhere in Manhattan, then make all stops to 168th. The P designation is for if amtrak has to close penn station for whatever reason, most recently a strike was averted that would have put the P train into service. It would be a designated LIRR shuttle that ran from herald square to jamaica across the and routes. If this ever actually happens make sure to grab your camera and get over there, because it is a last resort option. - A

INDman Posted October 31, 2008 Share #42 Posted October 31, 2008 On occasion I have seen hard written signs on R32s, even when made with a sharpie they are better then the flip dot signs.

It was what prompted me to do the current NTT set of avatars now available which use the actual OCR typeface. I actually did a rotating avatar using the set, and use it as my avatar on railroad.net. I could do another animated one using the actual NTT set using that varied color scheme, although you wouldn't be able to use it here. Just let me know. R421969 Posted November 8, 2008 Share #45 Posted November 8, 2008 On occasion I have seen hard written signs on R32s, even when made with a sharpie they are better then the flip dot signs. I think rollsigns are cool, they save money, and they are easier 2 read. the 160's, 143's, and 142's kinda have that same appearence save red on the 142s but its just so...standard...the variation is gone, specially if the R179s look like r160? but yea back 2 the point i think seeing a bright Blue circle with a Big ol white A on it is easier 2 read and dam more sexier then...red A on the screen. Boring!
Eric B Posted November 16, 2008 Share #46 Posted November 16, 2008 OK; redid it, and narrowed the letters to look more like the OCR (including completely redoing the middles of the M and W; used Arial Narrow for Q).
Radioguy Posted November 17, 2008 Share #47 Posted November 17, 2008 That's not bad. It's a good example of what they should have ordered for the NTT.

Radioguy Posted November 17, 2008 Share #49 Posted November 17, 2008 Well, possibly installed for Modern Puposes but is really useless and hard to see like the ones on the R-38's and R-32's. Not at all. Those are as archaic as dinosaurs compared to the current NTT displays.
Radioguy Posted November 19, 2008 Share #50 Posted November 19, 2008 OK; redid it, and narrowed the letters to look more like the OCR (including completely redoing the middles of the M and W; used Arial Narrow for Q). Here are my versions based on the OCR avatar set: Aesthetically, I like the route designation being the same color as the ring, but I think I still agree with you that the white "travels better" to a further station.
