FamousNYLover Posted September 8, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2015 Photos courtesy of LIBRU, Car Less Day, former Long Island Bus Mechanic, etc Onboard 6:30 n6 Hempstead Local Aaron and Sylvia, a BRU and Car-Less Long Island Member, have started the journey aboard the N6!Slyvia shared with us why she is riding:"I don't use public transportation too much but I understand that it's important to have GOOD public transportation. I wanted to learn more about the buses and how they are functioning currently, with the hopes of using them more! Excitedly awaiting our next bus to JONES BEACH! Notice anything wrong? We did, NO BRAILLE! Many major transfer points, like the Freeport LIRR station have NO braille signs making it very difficult for those with seeing impairments to enjoy simple summer pleasures, like going to the beach! Waiting for 8:30 n88 Jones Beach.Joined by John our band of riders has increased and he was more than willing to share his reasons for coming along:"I joined rate the ride trip to promote transit equity in Nassau but also to show the shortcomings of NICE and SCT. Most Long Islanders don't even know you can travel as far as the end of the island using public transportation, so I'm excited to prove that it's feasible, though difficult!" Look who joined us at the beach! Jwj's own Victoria has some problems of her own though:"I rode the bus until 2014, but I can't any more because I have a child and there are too many transfer required to drop the her off at the baby sitters and get to work on time. I feel like riding the bus is much more difficult for parents, especially those with younger children. I also work out east and the lack of connectivity between systems makes it basically impossible. I would rather ride the bus though." Sylvia's view: At stop 3 on the Rate the Ride bus tour with Victoria and John. Aaron taking the picture. Joined by Frederick at Freeport Still on the bus on the Rate the Ride tour. On our way to Roosevelt Field mall for a press conference. With Fredrick, John and Aaron. Press Conference at Roosevelt Field Mall Bus Terminal with Hicksville resident and Legislator Curan Thanks Simja, of YAI, for letting us catch our breath and enjoy a quick AC break! As a service coordinator for adults with developmental disabilities she has seen first hand the need for a robust, efficiant and accessible public transit system!"All of the programs we have here, getting to their jobs, all of our members need the bus. Getting them those jobs, teaching them to be self-suffcient is usless without transportation. Buses are blood lines for our guys. Its frustrating for those with developmental disabilities who need stability for them to deal with the unstable Able-Ride system. Governer Cuomo wants all people with developmental disabilities to be employed...but how can you cut transportation for those people and expect them to get to work? You can't mandate people wear red and then BAN the colour red. IT DOESNT WORK." Last NICE bus of the trip! What a great day of riding! Look for us on News12 tonight! Sylvia's View: Last bus in Nassau county! With Aaron, Yuki, Fredrick and John. Catch News 12 at 5 today to see how the press conference went. — with Aaron Michael. Our 2nd n22 bus became 15:40 n81 Sunrise Mall Waiting for 5:00pm S33 Happague Frederick and John went home via NICE Bus for Day 1. First SCT (S33) Bus of the trip! Waiting for the S45! Did you know the S45 is not only on of the latest running bus routes but also has Sunday service?? As of 2015 the S45 is one of 12 bus routes operating on Sunday, to bad it's only 12 out of 52 routes across Suffolk County. This is why we need increased State aid in Suffolk Sylvia showing us a little "Bus Stop Yoga" to keep the blood flowing! Last bus (S58) of the day!! Thank you everyone who came out and made Day 1 of #RatetheRide a success!! See y'all tomorrow! Enjoy the Part 1!
