Staten Island Expressway, finally done

N6 Limited

They said if they just tore it down and rebuilt it the they could have been done already

If only the Gowanus Expressway could get the same treatment.

lol... And the Major Deegan too... They started work on it over the summer and I have seen NO progress made at all.  Two lanes knocked out now for months... Ridiculous.  The Gowanus... At least it gets repaved every so often, but they would be better off just replacing the entire thing...

I mean I know Hamilton Avenue will never support the traffic of Gowanus but...man that section of highway has been under construction since probably the day I was born or even earlier!

They also wanted to build a new one along 2nd or 1st ave, and tear down the existing one.

Really? I drove on it Christmas Weekend and thought there were still some lane shifts, etc

There's still some little odds and ends left, but the project is considered to be open to the public.

Actually, they were working on it the year before that, but they started expediting the work over the summer.

There's also been proposals to put the whole thing underground.

Actually there was work done on it in 2012 which I forgot about that was a nightmare but it was wrapped up fairly quickly.  Whatever work was done the year before must've been minor because I didn't see anything.

Wait, they proposed the Gowanus to be put underground? I can see how that would benefit but isn't the ground over there..too...muddy?

lol... Where have you been?  That was considered years ago.  I don't the cost was the real issue more than anything else.

From Slosson Avenue, yes, it's still possible.  Why wouldn't it be?

The entrance is almost at Clove Road. There were complaints (both from the inside and general public) that buses would make it over to the left lane, but wouldn't be allowed to cross because of the double white line.

Well that whole thing with the express buses has been a mess.  Even when I use the X12 I'm concerned when it comes over from the HOV lane and comes off to turn onto Slosson and come up to Victory.  Not sure how either entrance could be improved.

I don't think it's too bad, aside from the annoying entrance at Clove I mentioned earlier. The X17 has been fantastic, using that lane. During rush hour, everybody's sitting in traffic, and the buses just sail through.

Ask CT they have HOV exclusive exits.

Which has nothing to do with this, since those express routes are going onto main streets anyway.

The X17C has always been fantastic when I've used it via the SIE.  There's usually not tons of traffic in the HOV lane anyway. For a while you had people that clearly didn't have enough folks in their cars jumping in that lane, but I suspect that they started cracking down more often.

That's the X17C, though, which generally runs off-peak. With the X17A during rush hour, there would sometimes be backups, especially before the upgrade/incline by Bradley sometimes it would be so bad, they would actually have X17A buses go up Watchogue Road to Victory and get on the SIE that way. Now, it's pretty much smooth sailing once you get on the SIE (with the exception of the merge onto the Verrazanno Narrows Bridge, which should be resolved with the bus lane they're building there)
