SunRailFan Posted January 27, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2016 Amtrak announced that they along with the Southern Rail Commission will be looking into restoring service between Orlando and New Orleans which was truncated after Hurricane Katrina. An "inspection train" will run between New Orleans and Jacksonville starting in a couple weeks to look into the feasibility of restoring the service. There isn't word on if the Sunset Limited would run the full route again, or if a different service would run Orlando to New Orleans and the Sunset Limited would run only between Los Angeles and New Orleans. http://www.mynews13.com/content/news/cfnews13/news/article.html/content/news/articles/cfn/2016/1/27/new_orleans_to_orlan.html
Gotham Bus Co. Posted January 30, 2016 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2016 They'll probably keep the "Sunset Limited" name for contractual purposes. If they give the the eastern section a new name (e.g."Sunrise Limited") and then eliminate that service later, they'll owe every crew member two years' salary as severance pay. QM1to6Ave Posted January 31, 2016 Share #3 Posted January 31, 2016 How popular are these long train rides? I know of some eccentric folks that enjoy long, scenic train rides cross country, but most people need to get places fast, or, if they can't afford a plane ride, use Greyhound or Chinatown buses
LTA1992 Posted February 4, 2016 Share #4 Posted February 4, 2016 The train has comfort that the buses simply cannot provide. And that's why I typically take trains down south.
Gotham Bus Co. Posted February 6, 2016 Share #5 Posted February 6, 2016 How popular are these long train rides? I know of some eccentric folks that enjoy long, scenic train rides cross country, but most people need to get places fast, or, if they can't afford a plane ride, use Greyhound or Chinatown buses I've done a few cross-country train trips, all during the 1990's. In each case, I flew one way and rode the train back with multi-day stopovers along the way. You don't realize just how big the U.S. is until you spend a month crossing it. Trip 1 Silver Star (NY to Miami) Sunset Limited (Miami to Houston) — yes, it briefly went all the way to Miami Texas Eagle east leg (Houston to Dallas), which has since been discontinued Texas Eagle west leg (Dallas to San Antonio) merging with Sunset Limited (San Antonio to Los Angeles). Trip 2 California Zephyr (Emeryville to Denver) California Zephyr (Denver to Chicago) Broadway Limited (Chicago to NY) Trip 3 Southwest Chief (Los Angeles to Flagstaff) Southwest Chief (Flagstaff to Lamy NM, van connection to Santa Fe) Southwest Chief (Lamy to Kansas City) St. Louis Mule (Kansas City to St. Louis), now called "Missouri River Runner" Ann Rutledge (St. Louis to Chicago), no called "Lincoln Service" Lake Shore Limited (Chicago to NY) Trip 4 Sunset Limited (Los Angeles to Tucson) Sunset Limited (Tucson to San Antonio) Sunset Limited (San Antonio to Orlando) Silver Star (Orlando to NY)
