Amtrak Looking at Restoring Sunset Limited Service

Recommended Posts

Amtrak announced that they along with the Southern Rail Commission will be looking into restoring service between Orlando and New Orleans which was truncated after Hurricane Katrina. An "inspection train" will run between New Orleans and Jacksonville starting in a couple weeks to look into the feasibility of restoring the service. There isn't word on if the Sunset Limited would run the full route again, or if a different service would run Orlando to New Orleans and the Sunset Limited would run only between Los Angeles and New Orleans.

They'll probably keep the "Sunset Limited" name for contractual purposes. If they give the the eastern section a new name (e.g."Sunrise Limited") and then eliminate that service later, they'll owe every crew member two years' salary as severance pay.

How popular are these long train rides? I know of some eccentric folks that enjoy long, scenic train rides cross country, but most people need to get places fast, or, if they can't afford a plane ride, use Greyhound or Chinatown buses

The train has comfort that the buses simply cannot provide. And that's why I typically take trains down south.

I've done a few cross-country train trips, all during the 1990's. In each case, I flew one way and rode the train back with multi-day stopovers along the way. You don't realize just how big the U.S. is until you spend a month crossing it.
