Summer 2016 Bus Route and Service Changes

Recommended Posts

I just saw the new B4 schedule and it's crazy that they keep cutting the frequencies when the line saw an increase in ridership last year.  The schedule looks more like an express bus schedule.  They just don't want this line to succeed...

Where have they cut the frequencies? I compared the September schedule to the current schedule and they have the same number of trips (besides the supplemental trips, for obvious reasons).

And they still haven't fixed the error on the B70...

Also the B63 reroute near the Gowanus has essentially become permanent, so they so should put that on the map too.

What's the error on the B70 route?

Its by McKinley Park. It is physically impossible to turn down 73 Street towards 8th Avenue. The buses actually use Bay Ridge Parkway.

The change may have come prior to September, but I could've sworn that they had 15 minute headways during parts of Saturday, and then they cut that back to every 20 minutes.  I can't really speak for other times since I generally only use the B4 on weekends...

- Also, the northbound B16 never turns on 83rd to get to Ft Hamilton pkwy. either (that one has always bugged me).....

- Also, the B64 routing is incomplete, just east of the Gowanus....

(CI bound buses can't take 70th to get to 8th av... only the Xaverian bound buses take 8th to 70th)....

With the B16 I think it's an issue with the map and the way it is laid out.  Look at BusTime and you'll see what I mean... Could be a similar situation with the B64 if you compare the map to BusTime.

Yeah well if they were, they just made them official.  Given the amount of buses skipping stops/no-shows, service is definitely worse off now.

Appearing on the map doesn't "make" a schedule change official. Schedules become official on their effective dates; after that, it may take a while for the map to catch up.

Yeah, That B16 is annoying. The B64 one might just be a matter of space (that block is so small that they might not be able to show that jog up 7th and not confuse people)

On another note, they still did not update the QM12 schedule.

I was just going to tell you that the rest of the relabels for 3rd Ave buses will go in September, with QM31, QM32, QM35, QM36, QM40 & QM42. So your QM12 schedule stays the same until then

Yes, but there's stop additions and a route change on the QM12 that went into effect on July 5.

In other news, the new QM12 schedule has finally been released. The new Woodhaven Blvd stop is now a timepoint on the AM schedule.

All of these changes to me with the QM's signify more cuts down the road unless ridership picks up.  Too many branches, and little by little the (MTA) seems to be saying, either these branches will become more visible (and be used) or they'll be cut.  The only routes that I think will be safe are routes like the QM2, QM5, QM6, QM7, QM8, QM15, QM16, QM24/QM25.  Changing demographics also don't work in favor in Queens.  The more immigrants that move in the more express bus service will drop, as they tend to use the subway.  The more affluent areas should be safe... Whitestone, Malba, Beechhurst, Bay Terrace, Neponsit, etc.  Middle Village for now and Glendale should also be safe as long as the demographics don't change too much, otherwise forget it.

Of course the MTA is trying to consolidate and reduce express bus service throughout the city. It will be harder to do this in Queens, compared to other boroughs, mainly because the unions will have a fit, and some neighborhoods will also have a fit. However, I have a feeling that there will come a time when the MTA starts slashing services. Ridership has been dropping, and ridership on some lines are pretty bad. Just to outline how bad it is on some lines, I was surprised to see a QM10 bus with more than 10 riders during the PM a few weeks ago. Mind you this is the height of the rush.

Yeah those QM10 buses can be pretty empty... Have seen quite a few along 6th Avenue myself.  The issue with Queens is it's so big and the length of the trips are not exactly short, which makes them expensive to run.  Unlike the Bronx, most of Queens is fairly safe, and that to some extent plays a role, not to mention the cost of living.  People are more likely to take subway there, even in areas where there isn't a subway. What I think the (MTA) should do is really study ridership patterns more in Queens to see how they can improve express bus service.  I do favor a consolidation, but in return have more 7 day a week express buses.  The QM15 is a good example.

In other words... "They have no right to cut service just because people have stopped riding it."
