Junius St 3/4 Closure

The work at and around 96 Street is pretty much a full-time thing. It just doesn't affect service during certain parts of the day. However, since there is a slow-speed order in the area, some (3) trains are being routed up to 137 Street to avoid backing up the entire line, especially during rush hour, when more trains are running in the affected area.

Yeah, I was was wondering about the (3) to 137th thing. Hopped on one today (at Junius St of all places after making the paid transfer from the (L)).

See now that's just stupid the stations are literally right on top of each other, it should take them a month max to build a stairwell.

They aren't on top of each other. Livonia is roughly 2 blocks from the end of Junius St. It's a lot more complicated to build a transfer there that what you're thinking.

Certain stations were not meant to be free transfers.

Junius 3/4 and Livonia L, Broadway G and Lorimer J/M/Z.

Jay Street–MetroTech wasn’t meant to be a free transfer, as well as numerous others—especially when the separate subway systems were competing against one another.

Of course, they could just do another out of system transfer. They're closer than Lex/59th is to Lex/63rd. Platform ends a block from the (L)20 feet from the stairs to the pedestrian bridge if they wanted to put a HEET entrance down there.

Thats Exactly Why!... I had that 137 run on Monday!

What's this LIRR Bay Ridge Branch?. I hardly see any physical LIRR Trains passing thru at area. Unless those sets of tracks are used for CSX trains and possibly train deliveries. (I could be wrong)

That branch is owned by the LIRR, but is used by New York & Atlantic hauling trash and other things. No LIRR trains physically use the line. The line gets used pretty often (I'd say at least once or twice a day).

If you ride the (L), it's the freight tracks that runs next to you at Wilson Av, and from Atlantic to New Lots Avs.

Agreed--a physical transfer will be harder than it looks. I was thinking maybe elongate the platforms but you'd have an issue with the track that goes down the LIRR ROW (New Lots bound).

You could perhaps elongate the Manhattan bound platform then build a passageway to the L. But then passengers would have to walk all the way to the front of the platform then cross over to a New Lots train since the entrance and booth are actually located on Sackman and not Junius St...(two blocks away).

You could also use the existing passageway (which simply leads to Junius st) and extend it to the New Lots platform, but now, you'd have the same issue if someone wanted a Manhattan bound train--they'd have to walk all the way to the end of the platform and cross over.

I am guessing any solution will involve some kind of fare control/crossover point at Junius st.

Im surprised that the MTA dosent use the remaining portion of the LIRR Rockaway Branch to provide through service between Queens.

Yeah, right?

That would be an extremely useful route...even a partial use of the ROW from Flatbush Av to Broadway Junction alone would take significant pressure off several bus routes (East Flatbush in particular).

No, physical transfer.....not too many things rattle me, but I would imagine during the night an OOS transfer would get a little dicey.

During the day, I'm looking over my back making that transfer.

Not to mention, imagine a snowy or icy day. You'll have to go down a bunch of stairs onto the street and walk down streets that will be the last ones to get shoveled or plowed, only to walk to the end of the platform (because there's no entrance on Junius st) walk up more stairs and possibly have to walk back the entire way of the platform.

The OOS transfer is too much trouble.
