indabronx Posted October 12, 2016 #1 Posted October 12, 2016 Hey "subwayers" Firstly, sorry for my english, I speak french and I work in the brussels subway. I'am return from New York City, I had use the subway a lot of time... Amazing subway, so familiar due to movies and series I visited, again, this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Subway_rolling_stock I noted that the number of total trains per line is now indicate in the "current fleet" table. When I copy this in Excel and make the total, I arrive at 583 trains. This number could be the real number of trains during the peak hours ? How explain that the table indicate 5288 cars, different of 6400 cars that I thought the subway have since I visited this page few months ago. Thank you !
Around the Horn Posted October 12, 2016 #2 Posted October 12, 2016 Hey "subwayers" Firstly, sorry for my english, I speak french and I work in the brussels subway. How explain that the table indicate 5288 cars, different of 6400 cars that I thought the subway have since I visited this page few months ago. Thank you ! First off, welcome to the forums! Second, that 5,288 number you got is the number of cars in use at peak times. 6,400 is the number of total cars in the system. A certain amount of cars are left unused on any given day as spares.
indabronx Posted October 12, 2016 Author #3 Posted October 12, 2016 Hello "Around the horn" ! Alright, so the 583 trains number is indicate for the rush hours... Amazing. Thank you for your reply !

Kamen Rider Posted October 13, 2016 #6 Posted October 13, 2016 First part is we have the narrow IRT fleet and the wider BMT/IND fleet. they can't share. second part is keeping spare trains in case one or more has a problem. third part is trains out of service for inspection or repair work. the MTA keeps a strict inspection cycle and because the subway is always running, not every car goes into storage at night where such work can be done. fourth part is that trains can be diffrenth lengths. Some models of subway car are longer. R44, R46 and R68 cars are 75 feet long. to make the roughly standard train length on the BMT/IND of 600 feet, you need only 8 cars. the other models are 60 foot long cars and need to be in a 10 car train. Also, some lines use trains with fewer cars. the C, J, L, M and Z use 60 foot cars that only run in 8 car trains. Meanwhile, the IRT lines all use 10 cars trains at roughly 51 feet per car, except the 7 line, which uses 11 car trains. Also, the Franklin Shuttle route uses two car trains (a small, dedicated fleet), the Rockaway Park shuttle uses 4 (except in the summer when beach crowds mean 8 are used) and the 42nd street shuttle uses three trains, one on each track, of 3 3 and 4. also, some lines get shorter trains based on time of day and or day of the week. For example, the M line uses 8 car trains Monday to Friday, but only 4 on Saturday and Sunday.
