MTA creating 1,300 signs for the (W)'s return

The  (9) will never return unless the Red Hook redevelopment plan goes through. In that case, the  (9) would just become a  (1) train, that splits off south of Rector or Cortlandt and goes to Brooklyn.

 

Between Cortlandt and Rector? Not even physically possible considering how short that distance is and how many subterranean complications there are. I have trouble even justifying the existence of the Rector Street Station once the Cortlandt Street–World Trade Center Station reopens next year for its centennial celebration. If the Downtown Alliance really plans to spiff up Greenwich South as a new neighborhood, then perhaps...

 

If there's a reason that it can't split off from the new South Ferry Station, then perhaps the old South Ferry loop could be demolished and turned into a tunnel connection. There's already a junction in place for the old and new stations, so why not take advantage of it?

There is no way old South Ferry is getting demolished. 

1. If the grade from New South Ferry is unusable, then for damn sure the grade from old South Ferry is worse

2. The (5) still uses the inner loop to turn around at Bowling Green

 

And what do you mean by justifying the existence of Rector Street? Why would they get rid of it?

The southern portion of the Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line has had a lot of work done on it; the building of the new South Ferry, the rebuilding of Cortlandt Street, and the rebuilding of South Ferry.

You're right. I don't see the Red Hook (9) ever getting built. If they ever are that desperate for a subway there, they may as well extend the (T).

The Rector Street (1) station currently serves a relatively isolated pocket of the neighborhood (bound by West Street, Battery Park, Broadway, and the World Trade Center). Until recently, it had been a ghost town since the construction of the World Trade Center began in the 1960s (and even more so following 9/11), but there are ambitious plans to completely revitalize Greenwich South, which would make the Rector Street station more useful. The Cortlandt Street and Rector Street stations are strikingly close to each other, both BMT and IRT alike. Even if both Rector Street stations were to disappear after 2018, commuters would not be too drastically affected. That being said, I wouldn't propose demolishing them for no reason.
