Express Bus Survey

I got a survey on the local bus today, with the exact same questions that were mentioned before. Don't know why MTA Bus is being scrutinized all of a sudden.

There are rumors that the City at some point may start to cut how much they give to (MTA) Bus, and if they do, then the (MTA) would likely be forced to cut service on numerous (MTA) Bus lines (both local and express).  This is EXTREMELY important to watch because neighborhoods across the city that lack subway service have historically argued that they were at a disadvantage because their residents had to pay more due to living in a two-fare zone.  Obviously we now have the Metrocard, but prior to that those in two-fare zones not only had long commutes with multiple transfers, but very few if any fast alternatives.   (MTA) Bus in a way represents "equality" in terms of the City providing reasonable transportation to ALL communities.  Now of course we can argue about what is reasonable, but the current set up at least keeps the neighborhoods that were originally in two-fare zones attractive.  Transportation has a very important role in HOW & WHERE we live.  Never forget that.  That is why I rarely advocate for cutting service because I've experienced first hand how a neighborhood can be devastated when those changes occur.  It isn't just about the people living there but also the economic vitality of the neighborhood... No transportation means fewer people coming in to shop, eat, etc.  It cuts neighborhoods off considerably and that can be difficult to come back from even if service is restored.  It can have a negative impact on property values. No one wants to live in an area with poor transportation unless they live in a car centric area.  

 

Just imagine areas like Middle Village, Glen Oaks and the like without express bus service.  They are fairly isolated and it's a long haul to the subway, and without a Metrocard, it would be two fares.   It is paramount that those of us who live in two-fare zones continue to hold the City accountable for maintaining these subsidies that affect numerous neighborhoods across the city.  Queens in particular would be hard hit since there are TONS of local and express buses run by (MTA) Bus depots.
