44 days of hell... delays and cancelled trains this summer

Commuters could be facing 44 days of transit hell this summer under an Amtrak plan that would take out tracks in Penn Station New York for weeks at a time for infrastructure repairs, according to an engineering plan for the work obtained by Politico.

The plan backs up a statement made by Amtrak President Wick Moorman at a legislative hearing last Friday that Amtrak planned to do the work primarily on summer weekends, but there could be two to three weekday periods where some tracks would have to be shut down.

The engineering plan calls for a 19-day shut down for part of Penn Station between July 7 and 25 and another 25-day work period from August 4 to 28, according to Politico

How would you cancel/reroute Amtrak/NJ Transit/LIRR trains?

Some people were saying reroute Amtrak empire trains to GCT

NJT would have to terminal all midday/evening Raritan Valley Line trains to Newark, maybe Hoboken... all Midtown Direct trains to Hoboken.

for the total closures LIRR can either cut out at Jamaica, Atlantic Avenue and Long island City and for NJ transit lots of newark and hoboken terminations  for amtrak they are cutting out in new haven and Philadephia with acela service suspended, and crosshonoring will be cruical to this

Septa will allow crosshonoring into trenton to transfer to NJT

NJT allows cross honoring

Path will allow cross honoring

and MTA will allow cross honoring including the subways(for those coming from new haven they would go to metro north and end at grand central)

and for those with a continuing  itinerary  amtrak will have a shuttle bus (for amtrak customers only) waiting to take them to penn station

I respectfully (out of genuine interest) ask how SEPTA or MNR will be affected?

My thoughts -

Having Empire, Adirondack and Maple Leaf trains originating and terminating at GCT sounds like a good idea.

I wonder if bustitution from SEC to PABT would help on weekends (at certain times) instead of trekking to HOB or simply to give people options.

All the Midtown Direct trains on the RVL run during off-peak hours on weekdays, so basically, they would be sent to Hoboken

For the NJT portion, here's what I would do:

NJ Coast Line

INBOUND:

- 5:35 AM trip from Long Branch to NY Penn will be cancelled. The 4:49 AM and 5:06 AM departures from Bay Head (arriving Long Branch at 5:27 AM & 5:44 AM respectively) will make all stops to Rahway (except Avenel), and then make stops at Newark and NY Penn. Note that the 4:49 AM train is a HOB train, connection to NY is available at Newark.

- The 7:05 AM, 7:37 AM, and 8:16 trips from South Amboy to NY Penn are cancelled. Riders on the 7:27 AM trip will be accommodated by the 7:27 AM and 7:47 AM trip arriving at South Amboy station.

- The 6:27 AM trip from Bay Head to NY Penn will make added stops at Perth Amboy, Avenel, and Rahway

- The 6:49 AM trip from Long Branch to NY Penn will make added stops at Avenel and Rahway

OUTBOUND

- The 4:16 PM trip from NY to South Amboy and the 4:36 PM trip from NY to Bay Head will be combined into a 4:26 PM trip from NY to Bay Head, making stops at Newark, Rahway, then all stops to Bay Head (except Monmouth Park)

- The 5:03 PM trip from NY to South Amboy and the 5:06 PM trip from NY to Bay Head will be combined into a 5:05 PM trip from NY to Bay Head, making stops at Newark, Rahway, then all stops to Bay Head

- The 5:21 PM trip from NY Penn to South Amboy will depart from Hoboken at 5:30 PM, and arriving Newark at 5:52 PM. Customers using the 5:21 PM train should take the 5:25 PM NJCL train from Penn, stopping at Newark at 5:45 PM, to connect with the local train to South Amboy.

- The 5:55 PM trip from NY Penn will originate in Hoboken at 5:58 PM, arriving Newark Penn at 5:24 PM

- The 6:03 PM trip from NY Penn to Bay Head will depart 6 minutes earlier, at 5:57 PM, arriving Newark Penn at 5:16 PM.

Northeast Corridor Line

INBOUND:

AM - All trains not originating from Trenton between 5 AM and 9 AM will leave 15 minutes earlier and make all stops.

OUTBOUND:

PM - All trains from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM departing NY Penn and not terminating at Penn will make all stops.

Monticlair-Boonton Line

INBOUND:

- The 6:45 AM, 7:17 AM, and 8:03 AM trips from Montclair State to New York will be cancelled.

- The 6:06 AM trip from Lake Hoptacong to New York will depart 5 minutes earlier at 6:01 AM and make extra stops at Mountain Avenue, Glen Ridge & Bloomfield

- Customers using the 7:17 AM trip from Montclair State can take the 7:10 AM train and connect in Newark to a NY Penn train

- Customers using the 8:03 AM trip from Montclair State can take the 7:50 AM train and connect in Newark to a NY Penn train

Morris & Essex Line

INBOUND:

- The 7:04 AM trip from Dover will depart 5 minutes earlier, at 6:59 AM, and make added stops at Maplewood, South Orange, and Brick Church

- The 8:00 AM train from Maplewood is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 6:59 AM trip from Dover, stopping at Maplewood at 7:50 AM.

- The 8:56 AM train from Dover to NY is cancelled. Customers can take the 8:48 AM or 9:05 AM trains (9:05 AM only between Dover and Newark)

Septa and MNR won't be affected but will be involved the in cross honoring of the project

i also agree that empire trains would be diverted to GCT

Cross honoring will be the phrase of the season... may the odds be in your favor peeps.

Case in point: at Lakeland, our 4:30 New York to Bernardsville trip averages 25-30 passengers. That number went up to 68 a few times
