You'll answer 50+ questions on a compuer.. Dr will question you about any problems you put down (try to answer no to everything). Dr will ask you to bend this way and that way.. There is a hearing and vision test. Also EKG (have to take off your shirt). And a they'll ask for a urine sample to check for sugars or something (They dip some strip into it). That's all.

Dave2836 Posted November 3, 2017 Share #85 Posted November 3, 2017 The practical comes when you apply for the promotion or open competitive position for either light maintainer, transit electromechanical maintainer (E&E or V&D), power distribution, power maintainer, eletronic equipment maintainer, or telephone maintainer. Those are permanent positions. Little tidbit, if you have not been drafted into Signal Maintainer Trainee, you have the opportunity to get into Elevator and Escalator. Elevator and escalator SPECIALIST is one of the highest paying hourly positions in Transit. Electronic Equipment Maintainer is also another well paying position.
moussaberte Posted November 3, 2017 Share #86 Posted November 3, 2017 Wait so we're not permanent after one year of probation and I got drafted to signal trainee so I can't get into elevators and escalators? Why not? 4 minutes ago, Dave2836 said: The practical comes when you apply for the promotion or open competitive position for either light maintainer, transit electromechanical maintainer (E&E or V&D), power distribution, power maintainer, eletronic equipment maintainer, or telephone maintainer. Dave2836 Posted November 3, 2017 Share #87 Posted November 3, 2017 Not saying you can't get into elevator escalator, but you have to meet the qualifications for the elevator escalator TEMM OPEN COMPETITVE test when the next NOE comes out, file for the test, take the practical, wait to be called, then go through the hiring process again. And yes, once you complete your training service as a Signal Maintainer Trainee, you will become a signal maintainer without having to take further tests, as per the NOE for #7609. Again, if you are temporary, it is temporary until otherwise notified. My suggestion is if you like the culture down here, then become permanent first and figure it out from there.

jake3178 Posted November 3, 2017 Share #91 Posted November 3, 2017 Are any of you guys nervous that this is a temporary / provisional position only, even next electrical helper is "education and experience" test and not a multiple choice test. How do we ever become permanent? Also, while working this provisional title, can we put it down as experience for other titles? Especially permanent open-competitive titles in the future?
tprashad0719 Posted November 3, 2017 Share #92 Posted November 3, 2017 the test I took in april 2017 was for signal maintainer exam 7601 I believe, it was a hands on practical

Dave2836 Posted November 3, 2017 Share #95 Posted November 3, 2017 (edited) Yes, this provisional title counts towards exerience in the requirements for 8 promotional paths. You will be encouraged to take both open competitive and promotional tests for the any of the 8 paths. Also, do not be afraid of the temporary prefix. You will always be on probation, the past has taught us that employees can be furloughed at any time. Use the opportunity you afforded yourself as best you can. Edit - I use "probation" metaphorically. We will always be judged by the public, and with the current state of transit, you will be blamed because the Triboro Bridge has a pot hole that ruined someone's suspension. The only thing is i don't think we'll be allowed to take promotional exams, every NOE i've read said its not for provisionals. For example: http://web.mta.info/nyct/hr/pdf_exams/7700.pdf ELIGIBILITY TO TAKE EXAMINATION This examination is open to each employee of MTA New York City Transit who on the first date of the practical skills test: 1. Is permanently (not provisionally) employed in or appears on a Preferred List (see note, below) for the title of Transit Electrical Helper (working in the Signal Maintenance Group of the Division of Maintenance of Way) and has been permanently employed in such title for not less than one year; or 2. Is or has been employed in the non-competitive title of Transit Electrical Apprentice and has satisfactorily completed the 3-year Transit Electrical Apprentice program in signal maintenance and is employed in the Division of Maintenance of Way; and 3. Is not otherwise ineligible.
Dave2836 Posted November 4, 2017 Share #97 Posted November 4, 2017 While that is true, you will have to talk to your department's human resource representative to determine eligibility. Additionally, attend the open houses as they become available to submit your resumes. Temporary is still considered provisional in the eyes of management. At final processing, ask the person reviewing your paperwork to see if they have made permanent positions in this job. Work on the small things first. Get past final processing, then finish probation and take it from there.
