Deucey Posted October 6, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2017 So I'm on an RTS (#4985 On the B45, if you're interested), and I see the Transit Watch sticker. I remember in the 90s there was a light box there that lit up showing whether a fare was a transfer or not. Why was that box installed facing passengers instead of the driver, and why/when was it removed?
QM1to6Ave Posted October 6, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 6, 2017 Although the boxes don't work, they are actually still on the old 2XXX series MCI buses at CP.
Deucey Posted October 6, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted October 6, 2017 But why were they facing passengers? I didn't need to know someone paid with a MetroCard in '96 and got a transfer.

I believe he answered it before in another thread.
MHV9218 Posted October 8, 2017 Share #5 Posted October 8, 2017 Those were for beakies and police officers checking on who was boarding. You could sit on the bus itself and watch how the fare had been paid. Similar to the lights behind turnstiles in the subway. I used to watch them to guess how old people were--if the ADULT light didn't go off and the PASS did (if I remember), they were over 65!

The SPCL (green light) went off if the passenger was 65 or above or had a qualifying disabilty
brokecrazy Posted October 9, 2017 Share #7 Posted October 9, 2017 Red was 1/2 fare. white students, green employees on the turnstiles.
NewFlyer 230 Posted October 9, 2017 Share #8 Posted October 9, 2017 They got taken off the buses sometime between 2009-2011. The Orion VII NG's from 2008-2010 never came with them and every other bus delivered afterwards followed.
QM1to6Ave Posted October 10, 2017 Share #9 Posted October 10, 2017 Someone on here posted in the past that the boxes were removed after one of the boxes fell on someone, which opened up the MTA to lawsuits,.

P3F Posted October 12, 2017 Share #11 Posted October 12, 2017 If I'm not mistaken, the sells these fare light boxes ("annunciators", if I remember correctly) on their website.

There were 6 panels on them: PASS | STUDT ADULT | SPCL XFER | BYPS -PASS (yellow) Employee passes -STUDT (dark blue) Student metrocards/half fare student change -ADULT (red) Regular metrocards, full fare change -SPCL (green) Half Fare elderly change, elderly metrocards -XFER (orange) Paper transfers -BYPS (light blue) Never really knew this one, always flashed on occasion
