LIRR service is delayed due to an Amtrak problem in the east river tubes, this has messed up NJT service too.

Surprisingly only one LIRR train got cancelled (an eastbound Port Washington Branch Train). Everything else and any other connection ran with varying level of delays.

Expect delays tomorrow morning while repairs are being made to damaged power cables caused by a broken water main near the Park Avenue Tunnel. Anticipate inbound delays of 10-15 minutes, up to 30-minute outbound delays, and possible canceled/combined trains.

Busing

Montauk Branch train service is temporarily suspended between Sayville and Montauk after a person was hit by a train east of Sayville.

Buses are en route. We advise customers to use the Ronkonkoma Branch as an alternative if possible. We will keep you updated.

Planned - Trains Rerouted

Trains run every 2 hours and are rerouted between Jamaica and Farmingdale, taking up to 50 minutes longer than normal

Mar 5 - 7 and Mar 12 - 14, Sat 12:15 AM to Mon 3:30 AM

Bi-level diesel trains will run every two hours between Penn Station and Ronkonkoma. Between Jamaica and Farmingdale, they will travel via Babylon and will change directions twice, but not make any station stops. This means that your trip will take up to 50 minutes longer than normal. If possible, consider using the Babylon or Montauk Branches.

There is no train service at Bethpage. Shuttle buses will be available to Farmingdale, where you can transfer to diverted Ronkonkoma Branch trains to Jamaica and Penn Station. A local bus will connect Mineola, Hicksville, Bethpage, and Farmingdale for intra-branch travel. For bus departure times, view the special PDF timetable.

The last normal trains to run are the 11:14 PM from Penn Station and the 11:16 PM from Ronkonkoma on Friday night. Service resumes with the 3:33 AM from Penn Station and 4:06 AM from Ronkonkoma on Monday morning.

We are commissioning a new signal system near Carle Place, a major step towards the completion of the LIRR Expansion Project later this year.

Realtime information for Ronkonkoma Branch trains will not be available in the TrainTime app on these weekends.

Take the Hempstead Branch instead, which will have increased service all weekend.

Express buses run between Hempstead, Mineola, Hicksville, and Huntington. Connect at Huntington with train service to Port Jefferson, which runs every two hours.

Local buses run between Hempstead, Mineola, Hicksville, Syosset, Cold Spring Harbor, and Huntington.

For New Hyde Park, use the nearby Stewart Manor station.

For Merillon Avenue, use the nearby Nassau Boulevard station.

For Carle Place and Westbury, NICE Bus is accepting LIRR tickets on the n22 and n24 bus routes between Hicksville and Mineola. See nicebus.com for schedules.

The last trains to run are the 10:52 PM from Port Jefferson and 11:39 PM from Penn Station on Friday night. Service resumes with the 5:08 AM from Huntington and 5:16 AM from Jamaica on Monday morning.

Due to the nationwide bus driver shortage, there may be school buses supplementing our regular coach shuttle bus service. <<

As of 10:00 PM, service is still suspended:

Service remains suspended on the Hempstead Branch in both directions due to a third rail problem caused by an unauthorized vehicle on the tracks.

As an alternative, use the New Hyde Park, Merillon Ave., and Mineola stations on the Mainline. NICE Bus is cross-honoring fares for LIRR ticket holders on the N6 between Jamaica and Hempstead, and the N40/41 between Hempstead and Mineola.

Service on the Hempstead Branch has resumed:

Delays

Service has been restored on one of two tracks between Bellerose and Garden City following an earlier service suspension.

Customers can expect delays and possible cancellations. LIRR personnel continue to work to make repairs to a third rail problem caused by an earlier unauthorized vehicle on the tracks. We thank you for your patience and we will keep you updated.

Rail Condition at Plandome has led to a suspension of the Port Washington Branch east of Great Neck, with service reduced to hourly.

We are running hourly train service between Great Neck and Penn Station. Train service remains suspended between Great Neck and Pt Washington.

Buses are now available in both directions between Great Neck and Port Washington Station.

Will they hold the shuttle buses at East Williston, extend the buses north to Oyster Bay....or will riders be SOL when service resumes?

This is due to an unauthorized person on the tracks being struck by a train near Albertson.

The person was struck at Flushing so there is nowhere else for the trains to turn from the NY end that won't energize third rail and endanger the people who are trying to clear the problem.

Maybe they should consider adding a turning point at Willets Point. But then, you need the to get to Flushing anyways, so maybe that would just be pointless.

Update:

It now says that Harlem Line service is suspended through The Bronx, indicating a suspension of service north of Williams Bridge. This is different from the language mentioned in the New Haven Line alert, which says that service is suspended in The Bronx.

Harlem Line Shuttle from GCT - Williams Bridge:

• Departing GCT @ :42 past the hour
• Departing Williams Bridge @ :34 past the hour

New Haven Line service is operating hourly between Mount Vernon East and New Haven, all stops.

Hourly service apparently has resumed, and full service is anticipated to start at 4:00 PM.

Update: Long Beach Branch service is restored. 

 

Some Delays

The Long Beach Branch service has been restored in both directions east of Valley Stream following earlier fire department activity near Centre Avenue.

Customers can anticipate some delays as trains operate at a restricted speed between Oceanside and East Rockaway.

Westbound:

The 2:52pm train from Long Beach due Grand Central at 3:46pm is reinstated and will operate as scheduled.

The 1:52pm train from Long Beach due Grand Central at 2:46pm is canceled.

Eastbound:

The 1:52pm train from Grand Central due Long Beach at 2:46pm is reinstated at Valley Stream and is operating 20-25 minutes late.

LIRR service from Grand Central will be suspended after 11 PM tonight and tomorrow. The last Branch trains to Grand Central will be departing their terminals starting from 8 PM. All trains will be running to/from Penn Station. 

 

Planned - Part Suspended

No LIRR service to or from Grand Central

Tue and Wed Aug 1 - 2, starting at 10 PM westbound / 11 PM eastbound until 2 AM

The last westbound trains to Grand Central are the 8:56 PM from Ronkonkoma (departing Jamaica at 9:55 PM) and the 9:40 PM from Port Washington.

The last eastbound train from Grand Central is the 10:46 PM departure to Huntington.

While the terminal is closed, all trains that normally run to and from Grand Central to will be rerouted to serve Penn Station.

LIRR tickets will be accepted on the subway at 34 St-Penn Station and 42 St-Grand Central.

Similar to the recent late evening suspensions to/from Grand Central, there will be significantly reduced service in/out of Grand Central the next two weekends (Friday night to Monday Morning). 

Special Schedule

Special schedules are in effect on all LIRR branches with reduced service to and from Grand Central

Aug 11 - 14 and Aug 18 - 21, Fri 10:45 PM to Mon 2:00 AM

Huntington and Port Washington Branch trains run to and from Penn Station.

Hempstead Branch trains run to and from Atlantic Terminal.

West Hempstead Branch trains run between Jamaica and West Hempstead only.

Grand Central service is still available on the Babylon, Long Beach, and Ronkonkoma Branches, with revised departure times. Transfer at Jamaica for service between all other branches and Grand Central, or consider using Penn Station instead.

There are some exceptions during the late-evening and early-morning hours. No matter where or when you ride, use the TrainTime app to check for changes to departure times and transfer options on these weekends.

There will only be three trains per hour: one Babylon, one Ronkonkoma, and one Long Beach train. Also not mentioned, is that West Hempstead Branch service will skip Saint Albans. The Babylon Branch local trains to/from Penn Station will stop at Saint Albans instead.

There are service increases on the Hudson Line, and pretty brutal cuts for the branches of the New Haven Line on weekdays. 

Hudson Line:

• Half-hourly diesel frequencies will return for parts of the day on weekends with three round trips restored between Grand Central and Poughkeepsie

New Haven Line:

(Outbound)

• The 6:58 AM trip from GCT to Stamford will depart 21 minutes earlier at 6:37 AM. A later alternative is the 7:04 AM train to New Canaan
• The 5:56 PM trip from GCT to South Norwalk will be eliminated 
• The 11:56 AM trip from Stamford to New Canaan will be eliminated, creating a 2 hour gap
• Fridays Only - The 5:42 PM Super Express from GCT to New Haven (No Stops to Fairfield) will be discontinued
• Fridays Only - The 6:08 PM trip from GCT to New Haven and 6:10 PM trip from GCT to Bridgeport will be combined into a 6:12 PM trip
• Fridays Only - The 6:45 PM trip from GCT to New Haven will be eliminated
• The 11:01 PM trip from Stamford to Danbury will be eliminated, taking away the last through train from Stamford
  • This creates an approximate 3 hour 24 minute gap along the branch

(Inbound)

• The 6:25 PM trip from New Haven to GCT will be eliminated. The 5:40 PM or 6:44 PM trips are the alternatives
• The 12:29 PM trip from New Canaan to Stamford will be eliminated, creating a 2 hour gap
• The 9:17 PM trip from Danbury to Stamford will be eliminated, creating a 3 hour 45 minute gap along the branch
• Fridays Only - The 6:16 AM and 6:28 AM trips from Bridgeport to GCT will be combined into a 6:21 AM train
• Fridays Only - The 6:57 AM trip from Bridgeport to GCT will be eliminated
• Fridays Only - The 7:42 AM trip from New Haven to GCT and the 8:26 AM trip from South Norwalk to GCT will be combined 
• Fridays Only - The 7:55 AM trip from New Haven to GCT will be eliminated
• Fridays Only - A new 8:24 AM express trip from New Haven to GCT will be added

From the LIRR Meeting Documents for this month, there will be some changes on the railroad on November 12th. This is in line with the new schedules that will remain in effect until March of 2024. There aren't too many specifics provided, but here is what apparently will happen:

Unknown Branch(es)

• There will be two more AM peak trains operating directly to Atlantic Terminal

Babylon Branch

• One pre-holiday early getaway trip will now operate regularly on weekdays
• Two PM peak trains will be eliminated

Port Washington Branch

• More AM express service will operate (# of trips unknown)

Ronkonkoma Branch

• Two PM peak trains will be eliminated

Woodside, Mineola, Carle Place, Westbury Stations

• "Adjustments" in weekend service - this appears like it may signal a cut of some sort for Carle Place and Westbury, and could go either way for Woodside and Mineola

I'm going to be honest, ESA really screwed up all of LIRR service across the board. I really think they never should have gone through with it, because they will never be able to make every rider happy. Maybe, if they restore connections at Jamaica, it could work and be better for everyone.

On the other hand, Penn Access for New Haven is useful since it's going to open up four new stations (which should be five, I'm looking at you, Astoria station), as well as bring a new terminal to the railroad. But the same issue presents its self again, how are you going to run service to Penn Station, without messing up commutes for those who are accustomed to GCT?
