Amtrak Train Derails Onto Highway in Washington State

An Amtrak train derailed onto an interstate highway in western Washington state south of Seattle Monday morning, causing an unknown number of injuries, authorities said.

The train was heading southbound, according to a statement from the Pierce County sheriff's office. "Injuries and casualties reported, numbers to come," the statement said, without providing more information.

A highway camera image shared by the Tacoma regional traffic Twitter account showed at least one train car dangling from an overpass onto the highway, identified as Interstate 5 near Mounts Road, which is between Tacoma and Olympia. Highway traffic was backed up in the image and the account said all southbound lanes were blocked.

A spokeswoman for the area's Washington State Patrol was traveling to the scene and did not have more information beyond that the train derailed, according to her Twitter account.

Amtrak tweeted that it was aware of an incident that involved Train 501 but did not immediately provide details. That train runs on the I-5 corridor from Vancouver, Canada, to Eugene, Oregon.

Alex Rozier, a reporter for NBC affiliate KING, tweeted that the regional transit authority, Sound Transit, confirmed the incident involved Train 501.

"This is the very first day for the early service," Rozier tweeted. "I was on that exact train this morning. We got off 10 minutes before the derailment."

Amtrak's website shows a new schedule for the train went into effect Monday.

Two very well known bus and train fans, Zack Willhoite "Bus Dude" and Jim Hamre, are among the two casualties.

That’s horrible to hear.  Sounds really close to home when it happens to the railfan community.   All the best to their families and everyone lost in this horrific tragedy
