Tbh: It would've been easier if they sent 2221-5 with 2346-50 back on the (1) in exchange of either

* 1826-30 with either 2451-2455 to go along with 2456-2475 or 1841-1860

The (6) R62As is like this: purple meaning Corona swap and red swapping remaining R142As over to one yard (1826-30 with 1841-60 or 2451-2475) With the (6) , the 1921-2-5 set should've been made with 2 more singles to Westchester to make more trains for the line (that's just my opinion).

The inconsistent part I do agree on for example, the R160 5-car Alstom units that were at Jamaica/C.I: 5-car sets are shuffled all over.

So many people on the forums noticed and agreed. The MTA has always been inconsistent...

Help me understand: why is it a big deal for R62As and R62s to be moved from (1) to (6) if there were already R62As amongst R62s on (1)?

First things first, There’s more R62A’s than R62’s, and the R62A swap should be consistent for maintainence purposes and unified inventory. On paper it looks “sloppy”...  asthetically it’s inconsistent with the whole LED rollsigns. Example; in 2015 when the (4) needed more R142A’s westchester didn’t send 74xx and a 75xx... they sent a full consist of 76xx that was consistent to the lowest numbered 76xx from Jerome.

I prefer it that way. In fact I feel that the assignment, taking into account operational needs, and the Flushing Line CBTC, should be like this:

  • 1651-1900, 1961-2155 (445) - 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-6.svg.png (Note, all cars with LED Signs, purple sticker)  Total trains: 44.5 trains
  • 1901-1908, 1910-1920 (19) - 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-S.svg.png 42nd Street Shuttle (no sticker) Total: 19 single cars configured in various units.
  • 1921-1960, 2156-2475 (360) - 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-1.svg.png (red sticker) Total: 36 trains. Note: 1931-1960 are to reconfigured into 5 car consists.
  • Total 824 cars (1 car was scrapped in the 1990s)

This would be the ideal assignment for the cars. However the single units may have to either have the LED signs yanked out for good or permanently set to local (green circle) while in service. Should reconfiguration of the shuttle occur, then the line would operate with 24 cars reconfigured into 6-car sets (2 are used at a time), similar to the 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-M.svg.png train shuttle operated during the Myrtle Viaduct work. This would be the final configuration and assignments:

  • 1651-1900, 1961-2155 (445) - 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-6.svg.png (Note, all cars with LED Signs, purple sticker)  Total trains: 44.5 trains
  • 1901-1908, 1910-1925 (24) - 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-S.svg.png 42nd Street Shuttle (no sticker) Total: 4 6-car trains (all cars in single units)
    • 1901-1902-1903-1904-1905-1906
    • 1907-1908-1910-1911-1912-1913
    • 1914-1915-1916-1917-1918-1919
    • 1920-1921-1922-1923-1924-1925
  • 1926-1960, 2156-2475 (355) - 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-1.svg.png (red sticker) Total: 35.5 trains. Note: 1926-1960 are to reconfigured into 5 car consists.

I don't know if this would be ideal for all lines, considering half a train (5-cars) for the 20px-NYCS-bull-trans-1.svg.png train would need to be removed from service. However, I believe service operates on 2-minute headways (max capacity with current signal system), and this translates to 30 trains needed for the service (and this assumes that the R62A continue to be very reliable to a point that there would be no shortage, resulting in loaning). What do you think? Any changes to be made here?

This is actually doable expect for one thing, theres a number of R62A sets on the Shuttle that were victims of the Cuomo "seatless" experiment. If to have those trains moved over to the (1) then I'd would suspect the seats would need to be put back.

This is a stellar idea IMO and is something the Department of Car Equipment could take a look at, however I can only imagine that all this process with the R62As would require some overtime labor when you include adding the bench seats back, removing or adding the LED signs, not mention configuring & re-configuring the width cabs on some of the sets that already do or dont have them. I truly believe the main focus right now on the R62A fleet is the A/C tune up.

From the list

Also, just quoting this: moving 1926-1930 to 1901-1905 to Corona b/c of the fact that they're used for work service.  If the R62A order was rearranged, it would be 1651-1900 with 1910-2475 seeing passenger service except 1901-8 as work cars but that may change.

Swap 1861-1900 (1) with 1921-1960 (6) since 1921-5/1954, 57-60 has LED signs. Also, that may change since seats were removed on some cars.

You are right, but I will address your concerns:

  • Seatless cars: Currently, several cars have no seats (except for the ones at the ends of the cars) to increase capacity on the 42nd Street Shuttle. Since those cars will be the ones being moved to the (1) line, it is proposed that those cars will not have its seats reinstalled. However, all car models will be retrofitted to increase capacity on the IRT. heres how its done:
    • For the R62 and R62As, they can remove the seats like what is being done now on the 42nd Street Shuttle. This can be done by doing the following:
      • The A cars will have the end seats removed, like the R160 (E) cars
      • B cars ending in 2, 4, 7, or 9, will have its seats removed (except for the ends of the cars). This will require the 42nd Street shuttle cars to be arranged in non-numerical order.
    • On the R142 and R142A cars,There are two way to do this:
      • A cars will have the end seats removed, like the R160 (E) train cars.
      • B cars ending in 2, 4, 7, or 9, will be modified with folding seats that lock up during weekdays except nights (similar to what is being done on the (L) line).
  • LED side signs: In regards to the LED lights on the R62As, for those cars that are not on the (6) line, they can either be removed from the cars overall (saving them for re-installation on other R62 and R62As when the time comes), or set to local (green sign) while in service.
  • A/C repairs: These car assignments are dependent on the A/C problems being solved. I hope this is part of regular SMS work.

Additional Concerns:

  • R142A service: set 7661-7665 is at 207th Street Yard for repairs, which was noted by other people. Once that set is fixed, then that set is to go to the (4) with the other remaining R142As.
  • (S) 42nd Street Shuttle service: Since Livonia Yard is very small, and the route has R62As, route should be moved from Livonia Yard to either Westchester Yard or 240th Street Yard. The assignments have it at Westchester Yard for consistency.

This should allow for consistent fleet assignments to each line and reduce loaning. The final assignments (after shuttle reconfiguration) should look like this:

  • 240th Street Yard (1) :
    • R62As: 1926-1960, 2156-2475 (355 cars for 35.5 trains).
  • East 180th Street Yard (5) and 239th Street Yard (2):
    • R142 for 239th Street Yard: 6301-6740 (440 cars for 44 trains)
    • R142 for East 180th Street Yard: 6741-7180 (440 cars for 44 trains)
  • Livonia Yard (3):
    • R62: 1301-1430, 1431-1434:1438, 1441-1625 (315 trains for 31.5 trains)
  • Jerome Yard (4) (370 cars for 37 trains):
    • R142: 1101-1250 (150 cars for 15 trains)
    • R142A: 7591-7810 (220 cars for 22 trains)
  • Westchester Yard (6)(S) 42nd Street Shuttle
    • R62As (469 cars for 48.5 trains):
      • Main Line (6) :  1651-1900, 1961-2155 (445 cars for 44.5 trains)
      • Shuttle Consists (S) 42nd Street Shuttle: 1901-1908, 1910-1925 (24 cars for 4 6-car trains)
  • Corona Yard (7) (506 cars for 46 trains. Note: Runs 11-car trains)
    • R188 cars: 7811-7936 (126 cars; 88 new 11-car trains, 38 C cars for conversions)
    • R142A conversions: 7211-7590 (380 cars for 38 trains)

Sounds very organized, but it seems like the (1) and (4) are short on cars in this assignment.

Maybe allow only 420 cars in East 180 St/Unionport Yard and 420 cars at 239 St yard, allowing cars 7141-7180 to supplement R142 cars 1101-1250 and allow a total of:

220 R142A cars and 190 R142 cars = 410 cars for the (4),

420 cars for the (2) (6301-6720) and 420 cars for the (5) (6721-7140).

240 Yard should have 360 cars and Westchester should have only 440 cars (maybe even 370 cars for 240th St Yard and 430 for Westchester Yard)

240 Yard should have 360 cars and Westchester should have only 440 cars (maybe even 370 cars for 240th St Yard and 430 for Westchester Yard)

I think to solve the problem with 240th and Westchester, cars 2151-2155 will have its LEDs removed (again, preserving them for re-installation on other cars), the purple sticker replaced with red, and assigned to 240th Street Yard for the (1) service. This will make Westchester Yard have 440 cars for exactly 44 trains and 240th Street Yard have 360 cars for exactly 36 trains, thus allowing both lines to run at the current tph limit at 30 trains an hour and still have an adequate spare factor.

Now for the (2), (4), and (5) lines, they are a somewhat special case, since they all run on some of the busiest tracks in the system (IRT Broadway-7th Avenue Line, and IRT Lexington Avenue Line express tracks). Like the other lines, the signalling system caps them at 30 tph, and thus a train every 2 minutes. Ideally, individual services should run every 4 minutes (unless ridership and other factors like population density along a line changes things), so that when 2 services run together on a single rack, they meet the upper limit of 30 tph set by the current signal system. Exceptions should include services that don't share any tracks with any other lines for its entire length ((1) and (6) lines in Manhattan come to mind) and lines with CBTC, in which case they will run every 2-minutes or 90-seconds respectively. By taking that in mind (making all trains run 2-4 minutes apart), and also assuming that EVERY IRT CAR IS IN TIP-TOP shape, my assignments would make sense (although scheduling trains along the White Plains Road line north of East 180th Street may be out of my control). The final assignments would be the same, but with the 5 aforementioned cars (2151-2155) transferred from Westchester to 240th Street Yard. This will allow spare factors of more that 6 train sets on each IRT Main Line. If the CBTC part of the Fast Forward plan is ever to be competed within the 10 year time-frame they promise (and I hope they get it done within 10 years), then your assignments can be implemented, since an increase of cars from all re-signalized lines will be needed (although even more cars than what you propose may be needed for 90-second headways).

The color stickers on the R62s/62A’s shouldn’t matter and I personally think IMO after an SMS those stickers should be removed.

For me, I think it matters to tell the car maintainers at 207th Street Yard what yard or line they belong to so they don't send them back out to the wrong line if they ever get sent to 207th Street Yard for maintenance. Here is how I would make the stickers:

  • (1) cars: Red
  • (2) cars: Blue
  • (3) cars: Orange
  • (4) cars: Green
  • (5) cars: Yellow
  • (6) and <6> cars: Purple (all R62A cars with LED Signs)
  • (7) and <7> cars: Purple (all R188 cars with LED Signs)
  • (S) 42nd Street Shuttle: Grey

That's how I would do it, but I'm am not sure if two lines (6) and (7) should have the same color (purple), since I feel line the (6) cars are very appealing with the purple stickers and the R62As that were on the (7) had purple stickers. To further supplement that, there should either be a yard sticker with a logo of the yard they can make, or a similar to the retrofit cars saying Maintained at _______ Yard. What do you all think?

I also think that the cars should have the blue and gold wraps on the sides of the train similar to the R160s on the (E) and (L) lines and the upcoming R211 cars. Also, if they do further retrofits to the R142 and R142A cars, then they should receive the new LED Matrix side signs similar to R188 car 7501 to make the cars more reliable.

Those colors were the exact assignment in the 80’s... they’ll know which cars belong to which yard. They do NOT NEED colored stickers anymore to distinguish what fleet belongs to a specific yard. The wrapped retrofitted R160s aka the “cuomo scheme” are just to identify which R160’s have the retrofit/more standing room. The R211 fleet will Definitely have that color scheme identical to the wrapped R160’s.

The stickers don't matter anymore... hence forth my gripe about R62A 2221-2225 still sporting a red 240th St yard (1), get's SMS'ed and moved over to the (6).

But they don't have the LED Signs. My roster involves removing the LED Signs on some cars, and refitting them on others, especially since i have a feeling that the red-stickered, non LED cars will have no business on the (6) once both the R62As in Flushing work service are removed from there along with the last of the R62As on the (7) and the R62A AC problems are fixed. This is why I suggested running every IRT main line service at least every 4 minutes to create adequate spare factors and more consistent assignments.

Where is the black ones? Those back in the days was assigned to the Uniport Yard.

If I was that, here is what the label stickers should be:

240th: red

239th: green

Livonia/148th: Blue

Jerome: Orange

Uniport: Black

Westchester: Yellow

Corona: Purple

Unionport yard is not a maintenance yard (similar to Lenox Yard) so Black should go to East 180th Street Yard. The Unionport Yard merely exists to store trains based out of the East 180th Street and 239th Street Yards for (2) and (5) service has no maintenance facility.

Your color band assignments were the assignments back before the R142 and R142As came in. Now that they are in and fleet assignments have changed, the color bands may no longer necessary. In all honesty, they should only put the color bands on the R62 and R62A fleet and the NTTs should get the blue wraps seen on the R160s, along with a sticker that says where it is maintained. The (1) should continue to have red, (3) should continue to be orange, and the (6) and (S) 42nd Street Shuttle (whose fleet and operations will be moved to Westchester Yard) will continue to be purple. All other lines will have those blue R160 wraps.

Your suggestion that the Interborough Rapid Transit should have yard tapes is brilliant, but you had the colors of those tapes mixed up. I remember it being like this:

  • Red for Van Cortlandt - 240th and Lenox (it became exclusive to Van Cortlandt before the Car Appearance Program)
  • Green for Wakefield - 239th (which later became the color for East 180th Street/Unionport)
  • Blue for Lenox and Livonia
  • Orange for Mosholu (Jerome)
  • Black for East 180th Street/Unionport, which later became the color for Wakefield (239th)
  • Yellow for Pelham (Westchester)
  • Purple for Corona after 2007

If any plan comes back for yard tapes, they should be based on this lineup. You are right about the entire new tech needing to have blue and gold wraps, with an indication of where they are maintained.

The yard strips assignments are going to be updated. In fact, I'm contemplating a new color assignment or the (7) Line: Teal blue. Reason why I say this is because it could give homage to the Worlds Fair that came in 1963-64, served by the Fulshing Line. I looked through the pics and saw the R33 WF and R36 WF cars painted in a teal and white color. The R188's on that line would be wrapped with modified blue and gold wraps that display some teal coloring and maybe a paint scheme similar to the R33 and R36 WF cars, although I'm not sure if that's necessary.

Also, Westchester Yard should have two colors:

  • Purple for the (6) and <6> line R62A cars.
  • Yellow for the 24 R62As on the (S) 42nd Street Shuttle (whose operations will be moved to there from Livonia).

Guys take my word on this, got the word from a buddy of mine at Westchester yard.

New green stickers to be applied to the R62As. One recently SMS'ed R62A already has them. Not sure which set though.

So those Green stickers will replace the appealing purple yard stickers on the LED R62As at Westchester Yard, and the Red ones at 240th Street Yard?

Should have been yellow, the orginal westchester yard color.

Corona should do the R188's in purple

Btw the orginal corona yard stickers were:

Black with purple diamond for Westinghouse R33/36WF and R36ML

Yellow with purple diamond for GE R36WF cars

They would replace all the sets that have those purple stickers which they genuinely should since those 62A's don't serve (7) in passenger service anymore. I'm not to sure about the 240th yard red ones since there's a few from the 1900s sets that still have them.
