No doubt the 222 R-32s had and basically needed a fleet ratio nearly 100% just to keep enough available to meet the requirements on a daily basis, whereas the turnover was just incredible due to age, wear and tear.  Plenty of such explanations were made but others disagree.  Better by "someone else" to provide the "surplus" parts than the "surplus" complete cars to protect the schedules.  And the R-179s are just doing so well anyhow aren't they, too?

How is it the R-143s are in a never-ending revolving door too?  Look at it this way:  in 2008 ENY was overdone at 628 total cars, with every possible track space then jacked but no way the need for every car that was then there.  Here its 684 an all NTT fleet in 2020 and the "company" is concerned about a possible chronically shortage (J)(Z)(L)(M).  This we call progress.

partly due to the 2010 service reductions and (V) elimination. It opened a new market using the Sixth Avenue (M) as a slightly slower version of the (L).

Yes, the (L) boom after 2006 did require some of the R160As that would have (at the time) been more than sufficient for the (J)(M)(Z), because the (M) was pretty much a shuttle outside rush hours when it went to Bay Parkway, and the headways were light (about 10-12 minutes for rush hours), and 10 minutes during Middays to Chambers St.

When the (M) was sent thru Sixth Avenue to 71 Av, the base schedule itself required more train sets, and now with the service additions that keep happening on the (M) to serve Bushwick/Williamsburg without having to overload the (L), the (M) has gone up from needing only 136 R160As to needing 200 R160As (plus an additional 48-56 cars for spares). the (M) now runs rush hours every ~6-7 minutes (with likely service increasing to every 5.5-6 minutes next year)

The (L) was supposed to only use R143s, but after 2008, it needed 64 of the R160As to be compatible for the line, and now with the substation completion, i think another 16-24 cars may be needed.

That leaves the (J)(Z) with a shortage and needing to borrow R143s, and having 100 R179s to fill in (although it is likely that the (C)'s R179s may be transferred too when the R211s arrive), but only time will tell.

Long story short, NO cars should be retired until the R211s arrive and are in great working condition (also to make sure the R179s are stable) or we could be headed back to 2017 where subway OTP was ~65%.

Even my dog cried:(!

Meanwhile,

The R-32s are now down from 140 to 122.

These 18 are now retired effective January 31, 2020:

3354/55, 3416/17, 3454/55 (dang, didn't make it...), 3484/85 (double dang...), 3688/89, 3732/33, 3774/75, 3834/35, 3888/89.

All was quiet today (Monday).  Might be a good sign that the R-32 roulette wheel has at least paused for now.

I rode on car 3775 a couple weeks ago and noticed it was missing it’s manufacturer plates, and now it’s retired. Same case as 3877.

Some pairs that I’ve ridden on that I’ve noticed still retain the builders plates are ALL still in-service. I could look for some photos if you guys are interested.

The (MTA) should not retire any more R32s btw. They will be severely short on cars. Explain later.

Interesting that @m2fwannabe brings up the ERA Bulletin. From the October 2019 Bulletin, “􏰼􏰎􏰽1,077 new Subdivision “B” cars would also be ordered as options onto our current R-211 order that will replace the R-32 class and oldest of the R-46 class cars” (page 20). I guess this suggest that some R-32s will stick around like @m2fwannabesaid?

Does this hold as a retirement farewell for the R42's? They still have that one set parked in ENY.

That was taken the day the R179s were taken OOS. Since Jan. 24, the day the R179s were placed back in-service, we haven’t gotten a confirmation from the NYCSubway twitter account that the R42s were “re-retired,” so we’ll have to wait and see as to what will happen at this point.

I told you, R46s now on the regular (Q)

probably to be swapped to the (B) at some point when there is time and all cars are accounted for

Do they need R32 parts ASAP or something? Sheesh.

Retired from service? Yes...unless another catastrophic issue with the 179’s. Should be sitting around the system in various yards.

I remember reading that NYCT shops custom makes parts for the 32s, so their shouldn't be a need to resort to cannibalizing cars for the 32s. The 32s recently retired are probably poor performers and are probably a PITA to keep running.

Fun fact, the R42 had a higher MDBF than the 32s did for Dec  2019... I think the fact that best running R42s were retired last where's almost the entire remaining 32 fleet was still running at the time has something to do with it.

people don't understand that there was always a plan to keep only 110 R32's until 2022 after Q3-4 2019-Q2 2020, they don't need the whole fleet and imo they're retiring the wrong cars. some of the retired cars ran better than the ones they're keeping.

What is the process for retiring trains? Do they perform a test on the pair? Or do they just have a list of car numbers and just remove them as needed? If a set of R32s breakdown, are they prioritized for scraping or do they fix it?

3446-47 is still in-service, on the (C) today

Department of Crawling with Electricity is a little slow on the draw sometimes.  Record keeping is not done at a snap as it wouldn't surprise if there might still be a B Type or so still shown as stand-by somewhere.

The (C) consist in question was:  N-3673/72-3468/3445-3446/47-3818/19-S.  February 3.

The only pair in those four NOT to be retired were 3672/73.  Don't know if those six dead are still walking, but after checking every single R-32 in service as of February 4, there were NONE other on the retired listing.

Way too fast!
seems like they’re purposely scheduling R160B Alstom propulsion trains for the Trains that drop out of service after the AM Rush, and the (F)s R46s as well.

i won’t be surprised if the (R) that goes to 96 St and comes back down as the (Q) in the AM rush stays in service and they pull the following R160B Alstom to be swapped

8763-8767 is on the (F) 8718-8723 is in consecutive order and the next set to be transferred to Jamaica. Man, I must say, Coney Island really took excellent care of those R160’s they’re cleaner and brighter. Hell, even the sanded cars are sanded neatly.

Next week?  3 trains per week to Jamaica.  All done this week.

If they want to keep the swap going at this rate and using the Coney Island layups during midday hours, then the (N)(W) cannot lose any more R160s for their AM rush and the leftover 160s need to be moved from the (Q) to the (N), with R68As taking their place (and R46s to the (B)) or R46s directly to the (Q).

Does this mean 3818/19 was gone and another on (C) in its place?

I just rode on 3819 earlier!! I had no idea this was a retired set, it ran so smooth! Still has builders plates too.

Have we yet found that fugitive R-32 train on the (C)?

N-3673/72-3468/3445-3446/47-3818/19-S

All those units were still together in that consist order.
