The civil service exams administered by the MTA for prospective B/O's, C/R's, and T/O's are usually offered once every 4 years. All officialized lists of eligibles have a minimum lifespan of 4 years from their respective dates of public release. More often than not, the MTA elects to extend the use of eligible lists for longer than 4 years for popular exams to assignment for job titles, such as Bus Operator, Conductor, and Train Operator. This can affect the release of new, open-competitive exams for the public to file for, as well as delay the hiring process for candidates who are awaiting appointment and processing for the same job title offered from a more recent exam than which was offered years previous and whose eligible list is still active. An example of such would be eligibles who are awaiting appointment from MTA NYCT Conductor Exam #6601. These candidates were given a lesser degree of attention due to the fact that the eligible list for the same job title was still active from an older exam; MTA NYCT Conductor Exam #8094. With the contents of this post in consideration, it may take longer than expected for the MTA to release new exams for prospects looking to become B/O's, C/R's, and T/O's. Train Operator Exam #7604 was offered nearly 8 years after it's previous counterpart (T/O Exam #8098), which was pubically administered back in June 2009—a duration almost twice as long as 4 years. Given the relative youth of the current list of eligibles for the most recent Conductor exam (C/R Exam #6601), I won't be surprised if the next opportunity for prospects to file for the job title of Conductor is further from today than a period of 4 years. (My prediction concerning the release of a new T/O exam being similar—more than 4 years.) If you've filed for the recent exams offered for the job title of Bus Operator last year in 2017, you're in good shape, as you could always take advantage of the promotional exam for Train Operator once you've established yourself as a permanent Bus Operator. Yet they have trainings for B/Os regularly on Mondays. With the way they go through B/Os I would think there would be exams frequently.
elantra06 Posted March 9, 2018 Share #5 Posted March 9, 2018 T/O may be going back to a promotional title only after last years test. Also I believe that list is almost 30,000 strong. You're looking at waiting almost 8+ years with a score of 90 for to get called

For NYC Transit, MaBSOTA and MTA Bus Company, those are offered more frequently for various reasons. Just keep an eye on this page to be sure you don't miss out on the opportunity!!
