RONKONKOMA — In response to its worst on time performance in two decades, Long Island Railroad President Patrick Nowakowski unveiled a plan on Tuesday to make improvements. And on the morning of the MTA Board hearing on poor performance, commuters started their day off in the hole. LIRR riders experienced delays again, this time due to the ever-present "equipment problems."

Admitting the railroad is too vulnerable to weather problems, Nowakowski said they plan to do a better job of clearing the tracks of brush and other debris. The plan also calls to have a quicker response time to problems.

The LIRR president says the extreme cold and snow in the winter is also an issue. He says they plan to inspect for broken rails more often and get additional equipment to remove snow.

LIRR officials also promise to have better communication with customers to let them know about train delays and also utilize social media. All of this is in hopes of doing better than they did last month.

"The service that we provided to our customers was not what they expected, is not what they deserve, and it’s certainly not what we try to put out there for them," Nowakowski said.

During the hearing, one MTA board member questioned how they will pay for these improvement plans. The LIRR says that's something they're working to figure out.
