- I don't think any SBS services should have 30 min headways at any time. 15 max.

The changes in the B/44 and B/44 SBS south of Avenue U have to do with the schools at Avenue X and Batchelder Street.

I do not know if there will summer school this year and I hope and pray this is not one of those situations where the schools did not notify MTA by last April that they were holding summer school classes.

School trippers run in the summer?

Why does the Bx12 SBS not go to Orchard Beach?

It originally ran to Orchard Beach when the service first started (10 years ago today). It was changed the following year after there was confusion over the two Bx12 SBS branches. The following changes were made:

Bx12 Local goes to Orchard Beach

ALL Bx12 SBS service goes to Bay Plaza.

This was done to have consistent service 365 days a year, reducing confusion.

I think the Bx12 local is already as confusing as it is...

I thought MTA would at least have special SBS service to the Beach to boost the beach's popularity.

How is the Bx12 Local confusing? During most of the year, it runs from University Heights to the Pelham Bay Park Station during the day, while at night, it runs from Inwood-207th Street station to Edson Avenue. During the summer daytime hours, they run from Inwood to Orchard Beach.

I don't think that is confusing. I think Bronx commuters already understand that.

I don't understand why it's so necessary for the Bx12 SBS to go to Orchard Beach. They have two different functions this time of year. The local makes it much easier for those not at SBS stops going to the beach. That way, everyone gets served, and there's more frequent service on the local. Bronx residents already know that the Bx12 Local goes to Orchard Beach, and that's the way it has been for years, even before SBS.

Just by looking at these Brooklyn service cuts about every Brooklyn Division depot is going to experience cuts in some form of fashion.

The ones that got screw with this round of cuts is Flatbush and East New York.  Gleason, Ulmer Park, and Fresh Pond didn't get spared this time either.

The only one lucky in this case: Grand Avenue.

(Any Flatbush Operator) I need a full explanation on this Overnight Bergen Beach Shuttle.

What's with the decrease of service on FB's major lines? B41/44/46. Something has to give? Hopefully, in the fall things get better.

years ago, my uncle did a hawk on the b41 that had the bergen beach - kings plaza work. i also did a hawk on the b41 (while on the extra list) some years later, and it basically is as follows:

on top of the run that you will be performing, starting at cadman plaza, you do a southbound trip into Bergen beach via avenue n/veterans, then instead of laying over on east 71, you proceed on avenue u to Flatbush and layover at kings plaza.

it's very similar to the overnight Q1's that serve both branches in Queens Village via Jamaica avenue between midnight & 3am, except for the b41 it's literally 2 trips between 3 & 4am, and those trips aren't acknowledged on any bus map or timetable.

those combo trips have existed as far as I've know well before my uncle joined TA in 2005 and when i joined in 09. i believe they haven't done the combo trips in awhile, which is why they acknowledge bringing them back, but i could be wrong.

So the new Q47 schedule which is suppose to show the increase in Saturday service throughout the day came out:

http://web.mta.info/busco/schedules/q047cur.pdf

I'm not surprised, but I have to say, I am disappointed by that schedule.

So, I don't know what happened between when the initial improvements were brought out and when the schedules were finalized, but much of what they promised is actually NOT on this schedule at all. First of, the MTA document mentioned that the Q47 would get service improvements throughout the day, from morning to evening, from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes. In the AM, that is true- but only if you're going northbound. If you;re going southbound, it's still every 30 minutes. Is it so difficult to run the buses southbound every 20 minutes instead of every 30 minutes, so you don't have buses with really long layover. In the end, you're not saving much by doing that.

Midday service, is still running every 30 minutes in one direction, and every 20 towards the end in the other direction. Again, what the hell.

PM service is running every 20 minutes in the southbound direction alright, but is running every 30 minutes northbound one hour after the 'PM' period starts. But hey, let's add one hour of 15 minute headways southbound from 6:30-7:30 so it looks better.

Evening service is every 20 minutes, for the first half. Buses still get heavily loads until about 11, but that can be worked out. Although, I have no understanding why there's a funky 20 minute headway from 8-9 PM northbound out of nowhere.

The MTA planned these headways based on the ridership patterns of the Glendale (southern) portion of the line, while not taking into account the Jackson Heights portion, which is equally as important. Although the Glendale portion is much more utilized, the Jackson Heights portion is also utilized as well, as I've seen the loads of people waiting at Roosevelt Avenue for northbound buses in the PM (right when the headway will be the same as it currently is). So, in reality, only reverse peak riders (usually the ones going to Marine Air Terminal and northern Jackson Heights) will only benefit, while those going to the subway will still be stuck with virtually the same service.

It's bad enough the MTA threw in a catch to the Q49 Saturday service increase by not only making it NB only, but by simultaneously decreasing afternoon service and early evening service. Absolute nonsense.

Maybe the passengers are riding incorrectly?

I don't know where the Bx9 is here but as always it's left out. There should be no reason a Bx9 from Riverdale arrives at Fordham 40 minutes late. There should be more buses in the AM rush, all the trip's I've been on have been filled to the max and then you got wheelchairs and lord it's just hell. I never have this problem going TO Riverdale.

Also, do those extra Bx12 Local trips deadhead to Bay Plaza first or operate to Bay Plaza?

The Bx9 shouldn't get anything until the farebeaters in University Heights and the other areas of the Bronx start PAYING.  Outside of Riverdale, fare evasion on the Bx9 is rampant thus making it appear that fewer people are riding.  If anything, provide more short turns to and from 242nd for Riverdale and call it a day since we're the ones paying the fare.

They keep cutting Bx1/2 service when they just need to find a way to stop it from choking at Fordham...

I'd argue riders on the Bx12 local have been confused longer than SBS has been around though.

The only place it says University Heights is on the schedule and that's always been filled with errors. For some time, it showed the local runs ending at Fordham Plz, now makes it seem like the day time runs don't stop at Fordham/Sedgwick which is the last x-fer to Inwood.  The westbound designation sign/pole signage have been wrong for 12-13 years and MTA never announced the change in the last stop. More often than not, when the W/B Bx12 local gets to Fordham Hill, there are passengers wondering where they are and operators handing out x-fers. As far as I've been able to tell, it's also the only Bronx route with no actual terminal/layover area.

lol I think MTA learned their lesson about giving Riverdale extra short turns after that Bx7 mess but that extra 20 run an hour will be useful.

Lawrence St is right, there's been little effort made to address a growing problem. The Bx9 has always bunched but it used to be able to make up the time it lost on Fordham, along Broadway (the biggest issue was having the Bx7/20 turn at the end of the light sequence at 231). While the development along the B'way has been beneficial to the community at large, some entity failed to account for/choose to ignore the fact that Broadway really only had 2 lanes from 230-239 sts and then choose not to build an additional road to support the new traffic (ex. extending Putnam Avenue W as far south as they could). They've installed sidewalk buildouts at 231/238 and traffic lights at Kimberly & Verveleen Places (my gut says one is also coming at 237 St), because the drivers are out of control. I know you know the (1) has been out most weekends, so that adds shuttle buses plus lane/bridge closures to the mix. Meanwhile the Bx9 has not adapted to the times: No Limited Service, no official short turns at 225 heading back east or any before W Farms heading west.  20-40 minute waits are just as common as MTA Staff telling people to just get on the bus (if they can) at this point.

If things go our way, we'll be having a lot more Bx10 running to and from 231st and Broadway during rush hour.  There's already a lot of them in the AM, but not any in the PM.  That's been something that Assemblyman Dinowitz has been working on and appears to finally have gotten the (MTA) to agree to.

I don't necessarily agree that the Bx7 is better. It still bunches terribly at times with large gaps in service.

Speaking of 231st, I was down there refilling a Metrocard recently, and as I was making my way to the MVM, someone on Broadway was yelling at a driver about them driving recklessly and they didn't hold back with the expletives either.

Generally in Riverdale reckless driving isn't a problem, but now that we've had all of these damn Ubers and cab drivers driving around the neighborhood that don't live here, all bets are off.  I'm becoming sick of it.  The idling. They come flying up my street (I live on a hill on a quiet street) and seeing cars flying down the block is not something we're used to.  I may push for speed blocks or more enforcement. Also lots of U-turns going on with these people.  Definitely out of control. One Sunday I was walking to the express bus and this cabbie comes flying down the street turns right onto Henry Hudson Parkway as I crossing and almost ran me over. I was furious.  You expect to be run over on the Grand Concourse.  However, people are generally more civilized in Riverdale, but as I said with these cabbies now they don't care what neighborhood they're in.

The Bx9 is also suffering from extreme amounts of fare beating, something you and Lawrence left out.  After 225th Southbound, I'd say all bets are off for people actually paying.  You have people constantly looking to sneak in through the back door and actually hoping for a packed bus so that they don't have to pay which holds up service. I took it once a few years ago from Fordham to transfer to the Bx7 after missing my BxM4 to the City and couldn't believe it.  Never again. The bus was PACKED, TONS of fare beaters and the trip took forever. I got off at 225th and Broadway because there was no air to speak of and I was becoming overheated with the crowd on the bus even though it was in the winter time.

I feel like if you polled daily Bx10 riders the last thing they would say is  "...breaking up the bus route into two parts... it’ll make things more efficient, and it should improve service for people."

How does one admit there are huge crowds in both directions and then only bargain for more service to Riverdale? Why would you push for the same plan that failed on the Bx7, on the Bx10 and minus the artics? Speaking of which, why not ask if KB could trade some 40fts for Artics or take a couple off the Bx1/2 during rush hours? If people are having problems getting from North Riverdale to "way way downtown ... Wall St" during regular work hours, why aren't we pushing for improved BxM18 service (idk more service + some runs that skip Midtown)? WHY would you quote two riders in article on Bx10 troubles if the proposed solution isn't even viable for them?

I never said the Bx7 got better...

It isn't that there hasn't been a push for more BxM18 service.  Believe me, I've been pushing for it for years. Senator Klein wrote a letter on my behalf pushing for expanded BxM18 service particularly in the morning, citing unreliable BxM1 and BxM2 service, and there are many riders that don't care for the limited BxM18 in the morning. It simply ends too early in the morning.

I favor more shuttle buses for Riverdale.  They work efficiently in the morning, and in fact I've used some of them at times to reach 231st, and I'm not sure why they were so "inefficient" on the Bx7?  The subway crowds are generally going to and from Riverdale moreso than the other way, and I'm not sure why he said that to be honest. Even so, many riders can opt for the Bx1 going the other way.  The Bx1 isn't an option for most going to Riverdale, who like myself live up the hills.

That's not the only issue with the Bx9, on numerous occasions, there would be an accident or a lane closure at 262nd St and all the buses can no longer turn around because they're artics.

Not only that, the Bx9 is DELAYED ALL THE TIME during the day. From traffic to three wheelchairs at once it's ridiculous. The Bx9 needs a LTD service, like NOW.

S74: Weekday Service Changes

  • Overnight trips from Bricktown Mall depart 5 minutes earlier
  • The 6:20 AM trip from Targee Street/DeKalb Street to St. George has been discontinued
  • Service operates every 12 minutes from 7-7:50 PM instead of every 15 minutes

Those changes were already on the schedule. I remember you posted about this before.

The S79 runs every 20 minutes in the evening. I don't think that's really a problem.

This Saturday will be the last day of service for the M4 from Penn Station. Signs are up on bus stops indicating that. However, it indicates taking the Q32 to Madison Avenue and transferring anywhere between 32nd and 57th Streets. Perhaps the M4 will be going to 32 Street, but I don't know where it will terminate, because the signs do not have them. Of course, as usual, none of this is up on the MTA website.
