S40/S90 to Matrix Park (Amazon / Ikea Facilities)

I stumbled onto this in the 7/19/2018 Staten Island GTFS upload. Apparently some S40 and S90 runs will now terminate within the Matrix facility at 'Lamberts Lane & 10 Avenue'. No mention of this anywhere on the MTA site, and the current S40/90 map has not been updated since last year.

Quick look at S40/S90 to Matrix Park (pdf)

Lamberts Lane & 10th Avenue only exists on maps at this point. It's probably being constructed right now. The other numbered streets will have to eventually be renamed as not to duplicate existing numbered streets in New Dorp.

10th Avenue can remain as 10th Avenue and all the other 'Avenues' out there can remain as Avenues. But the Google map indicates a bunch of numbered streets out by Matrix like '3 Street', '5 Street' and '7 Street'. Generally a bad idea to have duplicate street names in the same borough even if they are miles apart. The NYCDOT can rename the numbered streets with a 'West' prefix like 'West 3 Street' or renumber them all starting at '20 Street'.

I believe it's going to become an industrial park/logistics site.

Amazon is constructing a fulfillment center, and Ikea is taking another building for the same purpose.

The area is zoned for manufacturing. AFAIK there are no residential properties or resdidentially zoned land out there. A rail line crosses Lamberts Lane near the area but I don't know if the Matrix facility will be served by it.

Yes. The rail line goes to the DSNY trash transload down by Fresh Kills. If you see orange containers on CSX trains, that's where they're from.

Insofar as rail service to Matrix, I'm almost 100% sure the park won't have a spur -- though it's likely the tenants will use intermodal terminals in NJ in some capacity. A tad of a shame, given that the first plan for the site was a Brooklyn Brewery facility which would have used plenty of rail directly.

I still think the S40/S90 wasn't the best route to extend to Matrix/Amazon. The S40/S90 runs along Richmond Terrace where you don't want to be at 1am. Maybe the S48/S98 would have been a better choice as it runs along the busy & populated Forest Avenue. As you state the Matrix Park extension is noted on the 08/2018 SI bus map and is also included in the 08/17/2018 GTFS static data feed.

40 is the smartest thing bring it's start/end is a block away anyway

Looks like bus stops are available on Google maps (no schedule), and looking at the routing it only has new stops at the terminal. If that's the case then it should be a more straightforward route instead of running a loop around Bloomfield.

Edit: looked at the area the S40/90 terminate currently, and the road needed, 6 Av is actually kind of narrow. If it was widened, it could work, but now the loop kind of makes sense.

I don't think that all the streets within the Maxtrix complex have been built yet so at this point the only way in may be via Bloomfield Avenue. The last stop is described as 'LAMBERTS LA/10 AV' in the GTFS feed. Eventually Lamberts Lane and '5th Street 'may be extended to Gulf Avenue which would allow for a more direct routing. The street names out there are confusing on the google map and I expect them to be renamed at some point.

Well I think transit assumes it will be done before the new year,

It's already on our paddles as the terminal and listed as AMAZN, but they have signs up saying normal route until Amazon building is complete.

If they didn't anticipate it being done by than they would of left out schedules alone

I drove by a few days ago and 5th St/Lamberts Lane has been extended to Gulf (as a private entrance to the Matrix complex).

I assume they chose the S40/90 because 1) the Goethals Rd terminal is so close and the existing routes would not have to be modified, only extended down Gulf; and 2) to get to the ferry Richmond Terrace is faster than Forest or Castleton. The S48/98 would have to be rerouted and wouldn’t serve South Av or the Arlington-Holland Av terminal.

They would still technically be modified to bypass the stop in front of the trailer park (residents would have to walk down to Forest because buses would take Forest-Gulf, since it's being made into a 2 way street, which isn't too long of a walk)

But otherwise, you're spot on. Arlington is a very transit-dependent neighborhood, and the S48/98 sees good usage there (plus it offers easier connections to the north-south buses compared to the S40/90)

Gotta wrap the buses in Amazon colors too. Cuomo doesn't stand a chance.

Forget SBS, Introducing the new ABS, Amazon Bus Service.

So now corporations like Amazon get to run our bus service? What are we getting next? MTA Prime: Free 2-day shipping on MetroCards purchased online?

Hey, Amazon might run faster and more reliable bus service than the (MTA). Their shipping is on time 99% of the time😂
