Sim23/24 coming to MTA?

Recommended Posts

There's been talk that the MTA will take back those routes. The 50 express bus order for NYCT was initially supposed to be for retirement of older buses, and extra buses if they do intend on taking the routes back.

I think it'll happen eventually, but first the (MTA) needs to figure out what depot they'd go to and get buses for the routes. My understanding was that even when Charleston opened, they had already maxed out the space before the depot opened because Castleton and Yukon were bursting at the seams.  Meredith is not a full fledged depot, so there's that to consider too.  There's been a lot of complaints about Academy and them being too preoccupied with other contracts that they have... Stretched too thin perhaps...

Not the case. The garage that the SIM23/24 comes out of from Academy primarily operate commuter routes. The bigger garages operates other contracts and shuttles.

Well that's the rumour out there, otherwise they shouldn't have an issue making service, which seems to be a constant complaint (missing buses).  Also complaints about the buses overall... They look pretty beat up on the outside for sure, so I can only imagine the inside of them.

Most of the complaints that I've heard were about the buses themselves, rightfully so, they were in GREAT shape when they showed up, but they were eventually ran into the ground, and are now showing their age.

To fill that gap, they acquired some of New Jersey Transit's best MCIs(that they were already leasing) to make service as well. Those buses are in impeccable shape as Academy took care of them during their time and are still in amazing shape.

That all makes sense. My question is though, who would have the space for both routes? Isn't Castleton supposed to be rehabbed at some point?  There's been no talk of another depot for years now, and basically there doesn't seem to  be space for more lines at the moment.

They have been fixing up inside Castleton for a few months now..... But no expansion... DEP owns some space adjacent to the Castleton yard that has been unused for awhile but even if they worked that out it would only be 10-20 busses I assume

Well they need to do all of the work they can on that depot.  It is so run down and the immediate surrounding area looks like a third world country.

The word is that they'd be split between two depots and that 30 extra buses would be needed.

Where would they get the extra 30 buses for this takeover if it happens, prehaps Eastchester & College Point Depots can give some of their MCI buses to Staten Island or transfer the remaining MCI buses from Queens Village to Staten Island & replace them with some the MCI buses from Eastchester & College Point Depots.

Reading is fundamental... <_<

There’s no need for extra buses or figuring out what depots the SIM23/24 need to be based out of but one: CHARLESTON Depot.

You don’t need all that jibba jabba just for those two. If Academy can handle this, then the NYCTA can do it as well.

Codebreaking again?

No codebreaking these destinations are right where they would be for service, once you know 'the codes' there's a system to it such as one of these were #7235 it's pretty simple finding that stuff. So 7 is express than 23 obviously for 23 And than 5 is the direction and destination of that route.

Local buses are slightly easier where most of the time the last number is 0  and 1 and if you had a short trip in either direction it would be 2/3/4/5/ whatever.....  So like S44 to Yukon ave would be #6441 (6is for Staten island destination) but if it was a short trip would maybe be something like #6443.

And all NYCT buses should have all boroughs and express destinations loaded up.

Charleston is already full with buses. And the SIM23/SIM24 use a little over 30 buses during the peak hours, so yeah...extra buses are needed. We don't magically have 30+ extra buses right now to use when depots are empty by the rush hours....

Academy can handle it because they have the space......we don't. And they can get buses from almost anywhere they operate at....we can't. Apples to oranges.

It took 20 years for Charleston depot to be built and operating and soon after they had to add Meredith as the fleet continues to expand as more and more riders are taking the express buses. There is no room at any of the garages for the SIM 23 & 24 so let Academy keep running the service.

This December will mark the 50th anniversary of the first MTA Manhattan - Staten Island Express route, the 9X. At that time there was a Domenico bus service that ran via  Hylan Boulevard and Clove Road, New Jersey into Manhattan and the one trip 8X from Jay Street Brooklyn via the Verrazzano- Narrow Bridge. #8922 - 8933 New looks of the 8800 -8933 series were assigned to the route which ran from New Dorp to Manhattan  and neither the city nor the MTA anticipated the explosive growth on the island after the Verrazano - Narrows Bridge was opened in November 1964 .The 9X soon needed additional buses as the number of riders grew and grew so that buses that were part of the same series for local service were soon converted to express service   What I observed over the years was how Staten Island politics thwarted many of the moves that the MTA tried to make to catch up so Staten Island was been way behind in getting the depots built, so buses were (and are)  being stored here, there and everywhere . One must keep in mind that Castleton was a joke from the beginning having been built over Bodine Creek and the flooding occurred every time there a heavy rain. How many times did bus service had to be cut as the buses were get filled up and then would go around the block  and stall out. It took 50 years to fix the problem.

The (MTA) will find a way to get the SIM23/24 buses back and chop some services from Queens to get the extra buses for the 2 lines, and possibly get the 50 express bus order it so desires to have extra service out on the Island.  Yes, Academy can handle the service. However, if buses go missing than totally different issue that needs to be resolved.
