Alright so now that a majority of the local buses have onboard announcement systems, I want to also turn this thread into a thread that talks about any errors that the announcement systems make. The announcement systems get their data from BusTime, so if BusTime has the wrong info, the announcements will have the wrong info.

After looking at the depot rosters, every local line has a bus model with a next stop announcement system except for the Q11, Q21, Q22, Q35, Q41, Q64, Q110, and Q112. (a few buses don't count)

Obviously, the system isn't perfect and there are many changing variables and limitations, however, I want to highlight as many issues possible so they can be addressed in due time.

When riding the bus, if you notice any announcement systems that:

  • make the next stop announcement as a bus is pulling into the current stop
  • announces a stop that IS NOT a stop
  • announces a place of interest that is no longer there (stores, etc.)
  • does not announce a stop that ACTUALLY IS a stop
  • pronounces a stop name incorrectly
  • announces an incorrect transfer

....please post them here, so that I can have them documented and sent to the team that updates them. It takes the ones that see the action first hand (drivers, riding public), to help improve transit across the city in all forms.

For example, in Queens on the Q2 towards Belmont Park/UBS Arena has HOLLIS AV/217 PL as a stop. That is not a stop and should be removed.

For example, in Brooklyn for the B1 towards Bay Ridge/86 St has AV X/W 2 ST, 86 ST/W 11 ST, and 86 ST/NEW UTRECHT AV as a stop. These are not stops and should be removed.

For example, in Staten Island, when riding the S51 or S52 in the southbound direction, along Father Capadonno Bl the announcements play continuously between Sand Ln/Seaview Av. The stop coordinates are incorrect and need to be updated along the route.

I'm sure many here have noticed those type of errors on the bus, so please, post what you have observed.

Thank you for this!

The Wakefield bound 39 has a stop at 238 (Nereid) on Edson that is not announced and the Norwood bound 16 has a stop at Baychester on 233 that is not announced, although it might not matter by the time that the redesign commences in June.

The Pelham Manor 16 currently announces the next stop as Webster on 235 when the bus stop pole for Webster on 233 was moved to the end of the New York platform at 233 (Woodlawn) for the Metro North.

Thanks for these, and yes they might be fixed with the Bronx redesign, but who knows they had errors with the Staten Island redesign to where this day some things still aren't corrected.

Definitely though after June 26th I'll make note to see if it's been fixed or not.

When NICE/LIB had the announcement system running on wheel revolutions, the timing of the announcements were somewhat better. Then, next stop was announced shortly after passing/ leaving the current stop, that gave the passenger enough time to acknowledge what they heard or saw on the display and ring the stop bell.

With the GPS systems, the stop is announced very close to the stop, when it’s too late to ring the bell in time to Request a stop if it hasn’t been triggered already.  Should/can they shift the announcement timing back a bit further from the stop?

The following has screens:
7075 (CA), 7534 (UP) - Version 3

Note that 7534 got it's ViaNova displays replaced with Clever Devices as of December 2022.

7534 still has Version 2 screens.

On a separate note, 7304 has Version 2 screens just like LaGuardia’s batch (7438-7482).
