MTA Bus Operations: Historical Fleet Rosters

I was combing through some of the historical and present rosters for snapshots of size and make-up. Some of the numbers may be off, but not by much. I listed the source next to it. I also decided not to count historical, preserved, scrapped, or reserve buses.

The TTMG and Google Sites are good proxies for the number of buses being used at a time. Obviously, not everything was exactly up to date in each snapshot, but no one is screwing that up intentionally, and you have to thank those guys for their hard work.

The numbers go up and down for obvious reasons:

- Some buses are out of service. The hybrids for example, fluctuate from snapshot to snapshot because of that (1677 is Gens 825+NG 852).

- New buses come in and older buses are kept for a while, pushing the total nuber up for a while (ex: the Prevost entering in 2016, some MCI being kept then dumped).

- The introduction of more of one category as opposed to another (more diesels coming in now than CNG).

Observations:

- The express fleet is usually in the 1010-1020 range (duh), with the bump from 2014-2016 being the introduction of the Prevost.

- The 60 foot fleet has gone up by almost 300 since a low point in the 2014-2015 range, mostly by the introduction of the MTA Bus XD60 and the XN60.

- The hybrids were very stable for years, but expect that number to go down for a couple of years as the new diesels retire the Gen-I hybrids.

- There are less CNG buses (which is what happens when you don't replace older ones one for one, but with artics), and there will be as the focus has become on the hybrid and electric buses.

Just pointing out the obvious, but I just wanted to visualize how big the fleet was at a given time. Now my next step is to look at the pre-takeover rosters and compare them with the modern rosters.

A little update:

I made another count for today (2/1/2020) just to see how it compares to last year. I used the Google Sites roster. All the buses counted here are ones that are listed on that roster at this exact time and date, so if they not on there, then I did not count them (the remaining XE60s not counted, for example).

These are the numbers from 2010 to 2020:

Fleet    Express    Local    40 Foot    45 Foot    60 Foot    Diesel    Hybrid    CNG    Electric    Date
5827    975           4852    4206          975          646          3428      1681        718      0               5/23/2010      TTMG
5590    1015         4568    3921        1015          654          3285      1676        629      0               7/27/2011      TTMG
5697    1001         4696    4023        1001          673          3262      1677        758      0               5/2/2012        TTMG
5775    1015         4760    3972        1015          788          3321      1676        778      0               6/15/2013      TTMG

5919    1084         4835    4031        1084          804          3494      1677        747      0               4/30/2016      Google
5738    1019         4719    3865        1019          854          3304      1675        759      0               4/16/2017      Google
5892    1018         4874    3925        1018          949          3440      1676        766      10             7/6/2018        TTMG
5890    1014         4876    3856        1014          1020        3502      1652        736      10             5/31/2019      TTMG

5954    1016         4938    3786         1016         1152         3747     1456        736      15             2/1/2020        Google

You can see how the number of articulated buses has almost doubled since the 2010 count (from 646 to 1152, by about 506, and that's still not counting a few buses still left to be delivered). The number of 40-footers has gone down from 4206 to 3786 (420). The number of diesels has gone up, with new diesels replacing old hybrids.

The size of the fleet appears to be the largest in a decade, although I am just counting 2010 and onward.

I wanted to know the number of buses that were transferred from the private lines to MTA Bus. Using TTMG, the CPTDB wiki, and the Hope Tunnel rosters, there were 1273 buses that were inherited by the MTA.

Not all buses were put in service. The New Look Fishbowls from NYBS were immediately retired and, as far as I can tell, so were the MCI Classics from Triboro Coach, with a few RTS, for a total of about 66 buses. So in actuality, some 1207 buses were put in service by the MTA (although the number may certainly be lower).

The quantity of buses inherited by the MTA per company looks something like this:

COMPANY                                       QTY

New York Bus Service                   143

Liberty Lines Express                    86

Jamaica Bus                                    103

Queens Surface Corporation       313

Green Bus Lines                             245

Triboro Coach Corporation          247

Command Bus Company             136

TOTAL                                              1273

As of this May, the number of buses in  MTA Bus depots looks like this:

MTA DEPOT                            QTY

Eastchester                              133

Yonkers                                      84

Baisley Park                             116

College Point                            330

JFK+FR                   243+45 --> 288

LaGuardia                                254

Spring Creek                            126

TOTAL                                      1331

There have been lines that have been swapped between depots (i.e. the Q38, QM10/11, Q64, etc). But those swaps have usually been done with an aim of keeping roughly the same number of buses at each depot as before the swap.

It's interesting to note how......similar the base numbers are. The QSC, GBL, and JB routes have gotten more buses compared to back in the day, while the others have decreased by a little. The introduction of articulated buses has hidden a theoretical higher number of regular buses, but express service has been steadily cut.

I don’t trust web/wiki sources that I find randomly.

The link is: https://mtanyctransitfanon.fandom.com/wiki/Historical_MTA_Regional_Bus_rosters_(2005-2015)_(mtamaster_edition)

But, is any of this info true: 2005-2006 - MTA bus is formed over the years, and as a result, merged 9 different private companies into one. These buses were gained from the companies and renumbered to reflect the change:

1995 Fixible Metro E 40102-4D:

1550-1599 for Queensboro (Q101, Q102, Q103, Q104, Q105, QM1, QM1A)

1600-1629 for Eastchester (Bx23, Bx70, Bx72, BxM6, BxM7, BxM7A, BxM7B, BxM9, BxM10:

1630-1649 for Williamsburg (B102, B110, BM10, BM11, BM12, BM15)

Can anyone identify: 1995 Fixible Metro E 40102-4D buses - did they exist on an official MTAB roster? What private operators did they come from? Did they ever run for MTAB?

Was there a Williamsburg depot, and where was it located?

That’s a fan made site. It’s not an official roster whatsoever.

that is a fantasy roster. there never was a queensboro depot or Williamsburg yard. the roster described Williamsburg depot as someone's fantasy of the MTA taking over private transportation (the company that runs the jewish B110) i read that thing a few years ago and was thoroughly disgusted. i can't believe that page hasn't been flagged, taken down or reported by now

Can anyone identify: 1995 Fixible Metro E 40102-4D buses - did they exist on an official MTAB roster? What private operators did they come from? Did they ever run for MTAB?

Was there a Williamsburg depot, and where was it located?

In case you missed it, that’s is not a real roster. It’s someone’s made up roster.

I didn't know that the Diesel Orion V's used to run on Queens Village routes. I bet they looked pretty well on routes like the Q1 and the Q43. I wonder if there's some pics around with them running under QV.

Yep! #505-534 and #611-630...50 buses came from Casey Stengel and Castleton. They were at Queens Village to make preparations for the upcoming Orion VII Hybrids.
