MTA vows to scrap all of its old diesel buses by early May

In addition to all that, another reason it was never considered (other than not being efficient in any way) is because NFI has wanted MCI for years. They have wanted them since the D45HF was continued. It just wasn’t public knowledge. Hence the next gen D4500 now basically having a tradition NFI designation. D45 CRT and D45 CRT/LE

That's not particularly surprising.

Now when will there be a top-up OTR order to replace the final 35 or so 2002 MCIs (including the last bus inherited from the private lines)? The high-floor local buses are being retired fast, but the express buses also need to go...two of which are 18 years old.

On page 1 of fleets and depots ENY mentions a 200 or so sized bus order to be awarded later this year which will easily take care of the remaining 2001-2002s

It’s a 307 express bus order, with 257 for MTA Bus, and 50 for MTA Bus. Deliver to commence in 2020.

Just rode an empty 5160 on the Q17. Soon there will be no more...  Ah who cares. They did the job.

You were likely on that run that I and everyone else got kicked off of and went back in service at the next stop completely empty. I was also out there Thursday around 4 PM.

The op was about to take it OOS completely as the bus was packed full of people and every time the bus moved, it sounded like the rear brakes were stuck and dragging.

After everyone got off 5160 it took off without a problem.

At least I got some good photos lol.

Excellent news!! Good job by the Daily News for putting this issue in the forefront. The paying public NEEDS NEW buses that will be reliable and accessible.  For people that use wheelchairs, these RTS buses have been a NIGHTMARE. They often break down before the lifts don't work, NO AC, poor signage, etc. No good...

The fact that this bus can be in a museum and in operation is appalling. Accommodating wheelchairs on these buses adds 5 minutes to the trip every time. It isn't fair to them, and it isn't fair to able-bodied riders on a tight schedule. Flatbush deserves better and I hope they get better equipment.

Wow small world, I got on 5160 at Horace Harding and Kissena around 4:30pm. Didn't pay much attention to the brakes though.

66 RTS left in service and 17 days to go. A good 3 buses per day at this rate will get them gone by May 10th.

66 LFSs and XD40s combined will definitely be in by May 10th

Here’s 1 problem. Flatbush has about 35. While Ulmer is near zero. Dunno about MJQ.

Agree with the last statement.

I'm seeing 32 for Flatbush, 23 for Quill, and 11 for Ulmer.

Only 11 RTS buses tracking at 8:00 a.m. this morning:

FB: 5038, 5058, 5139, 5171, 5174

MQ: 5217, 5218, 5224, 5225, 5226, 5237

It appears that Monday was the final day of RTS operation at Ulmer Park.

Going to miss them dearly. Caught bus 5048 on the B46 local after dropping off a package.
