April 2019 Bus Route & Schedule Changes

If this is the case, they need to denote that. The way they scheduled it between timepoints along with the lack of any indication on the timetable, suggest that buses are alternating between starting in Wakefield or at Gun Hill Road, with no trips going express after Gun Hill Road. If you didn't point out the Bustime routing, I would have never guessed that was the case (even though I remember those Super Express trips).

I know, right? I would've never known about any of this either if it wasn't for me looking through this thread... And this new BxM11 pattern's been in place for a good 2 weeks now lmao.

@BM5 via Woodhaven They should've made the last SIM32 at 7:15pm to create (basically) even 30 minute headways from Broadway to Gannon as opposed to 20 minutes then 40 minutes

I proposed adding a 7:25 PM SIM32 trip. I also thought that some evening service can be shifted around to make some SIM2 trips run midday in this post... The 2 PM SIM1C to SI should also be pushed back to 23rd street since the SIM10 also has a 2 PM trip.

Here are my thoughts of the SIM service changes coming on the 28th. I will be talking mainly about off-peak service throughout the island.

SIM2, SIM3/3C, SIM32 & SIM33C: First the SIM3/3C, the gap in the morning between the last SIM34 and the first SIM3C in the morning is longer, 43 minutes to be exact. I would have converted the 9:15 AM SIM3 trip into a SIM3C to close the gap in Downtown service. The SIM32 should also have a 7:25 PM trip added since the first SIM33C doesn't get to Downtown until 7:43 PM. SIM33 AM trips from 5-5:40 AM should be converted into SIM33C trips to give Gannon Ave early morning Downtown service. I would also really like to see the SIM3C and SIM33C  buses coronated with them both not leaving at the same time. Weekday evening service towards SI is where I want to get to my proposal. Both the SIM3C and SIM33C have service every 20 minutes through most of the evening, just like the X10 did. However, the X10 was the only route to the North Shore in the evening while today, both the SIM3C and SIM33C provide North Shore service. Service can run on both lines every 30 minutes after 7 PM (So the SIM3C will depart at 6:35 PM, leaving at the :05 and :35 of every hour until 12:05 AM, with the last trip leaving at 12:50 AM, while after 6:50 PM, the SIM33C will leave at the :20 and :50 of each hour until 12:20 AM, with the last trip leaving at 1:20 AM, saving 9 trips in total, which can be used to add hourly midday service (and maybe evening service if the (MTA) is willing to pay a little bit more) on the SIM2, due to the fact that Tottenville used to have midday service with the X17 off-peak. Towards Manhattan, trips can be added at 10 AM, 11 AM, 12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM and 3 PM, while from Manhattan, SIM2 trips can be added at 11 AM, 12 PM and 1 PM. And if the (MTA) doesn't mind adding some trips to Tottenville and the deep South Shore later into the evening, 9 PM and 10 PM SIM2 departures can be added.

Another note: The 8:55 AM SIM33 trip to Manhattan should be converted into a SIM33C trip to fill the gap in Downtown service. (The last SIM32 leaves Slosson at 9:05 AM while the first SIM33C doesn't get there until 9:46 AM now.

@Lil 57 Agree with the 2pm SIM1C. The 7:25pm SIM32 is a good idea but of course it costs money.

Only issue with having the SIM33C cover the early morning and late AM rush trips is that it stops on Narrows (and also goes all the way to Midtown). Those trips should be short-turn SIM33s that skip Narrows (or just make some of them them SIM32 trips with the 32/33 running every 30 minutes each). Or just make them all SIM32s since the X10B had a shorter span and the SIM32/34 cover Church Street service

I think the best (and most affordable) option would be to have all SIM33C trips before the 9:15 AM trip skip the Narrows Road (imo the SIM33C shouldn't be stopping at Narrows in the first place and the SIM3C should get it's morning service back to SI restored) like the X10C trips in the morning. Adding SIM32 trips also costs money.

Not if you cut the SIM33 trips. The old X10B only ran from 6:10am - 8:15am out of Port Richmond (something like that. I don't feel like looking at the old schedule). Only issue is that riders heading north of Chambers have to take the subway or M55.

Doesn't necessarily have to be all the trips. But for example you could create a 5:05am and 5:35am SIM32 out of Travis and have the first SIM33 be 5:30am out of Arlington (then normal service for both lines after 6am). Same thing for the end of the AM rush (combine the 8:35am and 8:55am SIM33 into an 8:45am SIM33 from Mariners Harbor and add a 9:05am SIM32 from Travis)

Holy crap, how in hell is that even- I don't know what to honestly say anymore. This is just unbelievable, how do they find it okay to SIGNIFICANTLY decrease service on the Bx36 when its one of the most busiest and over-packed routes in the Bronx. I also can't believe that they quietly decided to reduce service from the Bx39. What has been done here is complete procrastination and a low class job by management. Someone needs to go to the Board Meeting this upcoming week and call the (MTA) out on this, because it is just completely unbelievable how they can get away with massively reducing Bus service in the guise of "Improvement" when its all about Service cuts to cover their f**king asses.

Interesting how they decide to cut the S78 when there's barely enough service for the S79 on weekends at any time... practically no room on the bus between 86 St and Seaview Av even when buses are not bunching and the next bus is 14 min away...

To clarify, I get that the S78 is not as heavily used as the S79, but to cut the S78 and leave the S79 hanging will only make things worse.

If you want to get to the South Shore via the S78 on Saturday mornings, good luck with that! Buses south of Richmond run every 45 mins to an hour from 7:45-9:30 AM

To clarify, I get that the S78 is not as heavily used as the S79, but to cut the S78 and leave the S79 hanging will only make things worse.

There never was enough service on the s/79 on the weekends and I am going back 25 years.

I remember when I worked weekends, it was next to the impossible to get a seat let alone sometimes board at Arthur Kill Road so I can imagine what is now.

My major gripe when it comes to bus service is that those who plan and make the decisions for the rider must do time in the field. That is if they are going to cut service let them hear from and see the damage (yes) that their decision will do to the riders. It is my opinion that if they had to spend their time with the riders and not sitting in front of their computer screens babbling with the penny pinchers about this and that and came out into the real world, then service would be far better. The S/78 has always had a problem and I had posted information on this some time ago on the forum. What bothers me is that if more buses are added to the S/79 especially on the weekends, ridership would increase as the S/79 one of the few routes where a change from the terminal in St. George (Yes when the s/79 started operations, it ran from from there to the mall) to Brooklyn sent the ridership skyrocketing over the years.

The S/78 is needed just like the S/74 is needed to Bricktown Mall with a decent headway as there is nothing else available (except SIRT but that is a considerable distance from both of these routes). south of Richmond Avenue. There is a difference between cutting bus service in the other boroughs as when the route is cut there (in some cases not in all) there is alternative service. Here is there is none.

With artics, comes service cuts.... It's why I didn't want them on the B35 here.... Worse, there are more buses that are emptier now, than there were buses before the fact (a lot of this is due to buses still bunching along the route) - which gives the illusion that ridership is significantly declining (less people on a BIGGER bus)... Which will give the MTA further justification to cut more service (meaning, less artics on the road than there are now).... Not to say that every 40' footer was packed to the brim before the artic conversion, but yes, a greater percentage of them throughout the day were, compared to the amt. of artics along Church now & what not.... They don't want to provide the service, flat out....

In other words, now that there are artics on the route & bus bunching is still going on, ridership is exponentially poorly distributed..... I bet anything that this same phenomena will happen with the Bx36.... What's going to be worse for the Bx36 is that the route itself has buses making 3684531352489464 turns, on top of the impending worsening ridership distribution factor....

To sum it up, service will end up being painstakingly slow, on top of the service cuts.... Double whammy.

The worst thing about it is that the service cuts don't even follow their own guideline (but not to say that I'm surprised). There's no reason why under artics, more than 50% of service is cut in several cases. For some parts of the rush hour and evening periods on the local, service has been cut by 60% or more.

When the MTA talks guidelines, it goes in one ear & out the other.... To me, it means nothing.

If I'm being honest, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the issue for the Bx36 receiving such steep cuts has to do with the Bx6.

Keep in mind that the local wasn't exactly being considered for articulated buses when the Bx36 was. (By contrast, SBS was always supposed to use artics.)

They've made massive cuts on the Bx36, and now the buses are even more overcrowded than what the 40 Footers were, some days its worse with sometimes 3-4 consecutive buses passing by that are overcrowded.

I never really understood why the MTA slashes headways on routes once they're converted to artic operations. The point of adding artics is to increase total passenger capacity on the route. Adding artics and then slashing service brings you back to square one.
