mianyc Posted May 16, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2019 Hi all, I accepted a job with the LIRR because another position I really wanted took to long to hear back. Now almost a year later, I get a call for a "probable employment" screening for the MTA in NYC job I really wanted. Can I switch jobs if I'm still new at my job with the LIRR (on probation for 1 year)? Will either agencies allow it?

Make sure you do your due diligence with the NYCT title before you give up what you have.
INDman Posted May 24, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 24, 2019 Even though they are both MTA jobs, it’s like quitting Pathmark to work a Key Food. Everything will start over when you go to NYCT and you won’t be paying into Railroad Retirement anymore.
dangernoodle Posted August 4, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) The 1-year probation is usually only for jobs within your agency. So say you're in customer service with LIRR but you find a job at Hillside, you won't be eligible if you haven't made it off probation. But if you apply for something with Metro-North, for example, you don't need to be off LIRR probation. As others have said, NYCT is completely different. Wages are lower too and there's less room for moving up. Take it if you're keen on it but it will be a lot harder to get back in with LIRR if you left before finishing your probation. klisty Posted January 26 Share #5 Posted January 26 I am looking to join MTA and was wondering what the best area to apply is as i heard it is difficult to switch branches once you are in and I live on long Island so commute would be an issue for further places, From what I have heard the rail is the best for pay and benefits. If anyone has any insight I would really appreciate it. Thanks
